Length can be measured in different units
inches feet Go over this term orally with the class. You may want student to make a foldable for key vocabulary terms. The students should be instructed to write the terms “inches,” “feet,” “yards,” and “miles” on the outside of the flap, and then on the inside they will write what this term means. The students will also put a representation of the term (like the one on the PowerPoint slide). Each vocabulary term will be set up on the foldable in the same manner. yards miles

Use to measure large objects or small distances
feet Use to measure large objects or small distances 12 inches = 1 foot chalkboard around the slide classroom
6
Use to measure large objects or small distances
yards Use to measure large objects or small distances 3 feet = 1 yard school bus running football field track
7
Use to measure large distances
miles Use to measure large distances 5,280 feet = 1 mile Distance on air land water

If the girl in the picture is about 4 feet tall, about how tall is the tree? Teachers may want to hand out cards that have the letters A,B,C, and D written on them in large print to each student. Students can raise the card that corresponds with their answer choice. I teach my students sign language for A, B, C, and D. We read the question aloud, I give them a few seconds to figure out their answer then I say “1, 2, 3 show me” and they show me their answer in sign language. This can also be performed with cards. I use this method with every multiple choice slide. A 20 feet B 6 feet C 30 feet D 12 feet

Remember DO NOT start measuring at the 1 inch mark!
When using a ruler, decide if you need to measure in inches or centimeters. 2 ½ centimeters = 1 inch Remember DO NOT start measuring at the 1 inch mark!
