Aims of the day To support teachers, lecturers and assessors in their understanding of the requirements of the revised course assessment for National 5 Fashion & Textile Technology To provide opportunities for delegates to: ask questions and seek clarification discuss the revised requirements with colleagues

Structure of the course assessment
Component 1: Question Paper 30 marks, 30% of the course assessment Set and marked by SQA Component 2: Assignment 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment Submitted to SQA for marking Component 3: Practical Activity Marked by centre staff, subject to verification by SQA

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
Skills, knowledge and understanding for the course assessment The following provides details of skills, knowledge and understanding sampled in the course assessment: choose textiles based on their characteristics and properties, and evaluate their suitability for different purposes: fibres: natural fibres, regenerated fibres, synthetic fibres types of fabric construction: woven, knitted, felted, bonded explain fashion/textile trends

explain the fashion/textile choices of consumers: peer pressure, celebrity/role models, online shopping, environmental issues use investigative techniques to carry out detailed investigations into given briefs interpret and develop solutions for detailed fashion/textile items to meet given briefs

Presentation 1 Question Paper

Question Paper The question paper will be worth 30 marks
There will be 3 x 10 mark questions Each question will be themed All questions will be drawn from the skills, knowledge and understanding listed in the National 5 Fashion and Textile Technology: Course Specification All questions will use command words from SQA’s defined list

Command words Name/state/identify/give What the candidate has to do:
Provide a number of items or facts that are relevant to the question. Example: Name two types of seam that would be suitable for a denim skirt.

Define or give an account of a number of points that relate to the question. Example: Describe four design features that would be important for a baby’s soft toy.

Make the relationship between things clear by showing the connection Example: Explain two factors that should be considered when choosing a fabric for baby’s clothing.

The difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’
Command words The difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ Describe four design features that would be important for a baby’s soft toy. All features should be attached securely. Explain the importance of four design features for a baby’s soft toy. The eyes should be secure so that the baby cannot get them off and swallow them.

Stage 1: Design and Plan 1a Identify two themes to investigate from the chosen brief. No change marks

1b Produce evidence of carrying out three investigations into the themes each with a specific focus, using at least two different investigative techniques. Change: An additional investigation is required 5 marks x 3 investigations = 15 marks

1c Present an appropriate solution for the detailed fashion/textile item, identifying and explaining seven features which relate to findings from each of the investigations. Presentation of solution 2 marks No change Explanation of features 14 marks Change: Increase in mark allocation from 8 to 14

1d Produce a detailed plan for the making of the detailed fashion/textile item. Change: Increase in mark allocation from 3 to 4 1e Prepare a requisition for the required textiles, components, tools and equipment Change: New section 3 marks

Stage 2: Making the item 2a Set up, adjust and use appropriate tools
