The reason they have this name is they share a similar appearance with actual bath salts.

Synthetic Cathinones are the synthetic version of cathinone.
Cathinone comes from the Khat plant.
This plant is grown in East Africa and is chewed on for its mild stimulant effects.

Synthetic means that it was created by humans in a lab.
In the case of Synthetic Cathinone this makes it very dangerous.
It no longer is a mild stimulant like in the Khat plan.
