Remix Mackenzie Greene, Tripp Brown, Riley Ouellette & Chris Zdyrski

2 Important things to do when you remix
Three Techniques: 1)Copy 2)Transform 3)Combine Ex: “You take existing songs, you chop them up, you transform the pieces, you combine them back together again, and you’ve got a new song, but that new song is clearly comprised of old songs.”

3 Remix Related to Genre? Remixes are used in every type of genre
Songs - lyrics, ideas, and beats can be used from previous artists Movies - plot, characters, and themes can be remixed (Everything’s a Remix) Books - similar to movies, ideas, plot, and ending can be remixed from previous authors Inventions - improvements upon previous ideas

4 Remix Related to Audience?
Remix can be very influential in regards to audience. It may both introduce a piece to a new audience and remove it from a previous audience. For example, country artist Brantley Gilbert did a remix of his song, “Bottoms Up,” with rap artist T.I.. This collaboration brought Brantley’s music into an entirely new light with an audience as drastically different from country as T.I.’s.

5 Remix Related to Purpose?
-Remixing has many purposes -To entertain: movies, songs, books, musicals. Ex) “Mean Girls” (2004) is a remix of “Clueless” (1995) which is a remix of “Heathers” (1988) -To Inform: Multiple updated versions of textbooks to keep us educated. -To Revise/Fix Work (Chpt. 9): Turning our “Shitty first draft” into a 2nd draft is a form of remixing our compositions to improve our own work.

6 Example of Remix (Entertainment)

7 Effects of Remix? -If you choose to remix you need to make sure it is done correctly, or it will ruin the effectiveness of your composition. -In reference to the video “Everything’s a Remix”, Led Zeppelin gave up their credibility and were even called “Ripoffs” by remixing various artists without consent. -Ethos: Credibility to the audience. While remixing it is important to have credibility which can include giving credit to the composers before you. -While some “Remixes” like Lep Zepplin failed, other have thrived. -The series of films “Scary Movie” for example is the epitome of a successful remix because it was all with consent.

8 Summary Remix- to mix something again, redo it
Used in all cultures and genres Many books/movies/songs borrow ideas from previously published material Artists must be careful when remixing to make sure they combine enough of their new ideas with borrowed ideas
