Definitions Name Explanation Potable Water Water Suitable for human consumption free of pathogens, major pollutants, containing <50 mg nitrates/L, and not having toxic amounts for any mineral. May or may not contain natural flavors. Added caloric sweetener (ACS) All composite sugars added to a food, including but not limited to sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses, and other syrup. Example: Honey, cane sugar, beet sugar, high fructose corn syrup, agave syrup, etc. Non-Caloric Sweetener (NCS) Food and Drug Administration (FDA)approved food additive (synthetic produced or produced from a naturally occurring source) that provides sugar like sweet taste while containing significantly less calories per gram compared to caloric sweeteners. Example; sorbitol, sucralose, aspartame, erythritol, stevia, acesulfame, ect. Naturally Occurring Sugar Sugars occurring naturally in foods and not added in processing, preparation or at the table. Example sugars in milk, fruit juice and vegetable juices. Calorically sweetened beverages (CSB) Any beverages (carbonated, non carbonated, caffeinated, and non-caffeinated) to which caloric sweetener is added during processing and/or at the table. Non calorically sweetened beverages (N-CSB) Any beverages (carbonated, non carbonated, caffeinated, and non-caffeinated) to which FDA approved non caloric sweeteners are added during processing and/or at the table. Fruit Juice Fruit juice are beverages are exclusively composed of an aqueous liquid or liquid extracted from one or more fruits with no added caloric sweetener Vegetable Juice Vegetable juice are beverages that are exclusively composed of an aqueous liquid or liquid extracted from one or more vegetable with no added caloric sweetener Milk Substitute Milk Substitute is a beverage that contains similar amounts of proteins, fats, and other vitamins and minerals, and is meant to replace the milk from a mammal. Current Criteria Red (Avoid Consumption) Yellow (Limit to one to two 8 fl servings) Green (Ad-lib) CSB with ≥ 10 grams of ACS per 8 fl oz serving CSB with < 10 grams of ACS per 8 fl oz serving CSB must not be consumed Ad-lib N-CSB that contain ≥ 15 grams of NCS per 8 fl oz serving N-CSB that contain < 15 grams and ≥ 5 grams of NCS per 8 fl oz serving N-CSB that contain <5 grams of NCS per 8 fl oz serving Fruit juice with ≥ 30 gram of naturally occurring sugar per 8 fl oz serving Fruit juice that contains <30 gram of naturally occurring sugar per 8 fl oz serving Fruit juices must not be consumed Ad-lib Vegetable juice that contains ≥ 20 grams of naturally occurring sugar per 8 fl oz serving Vegetable juice that contains < 20 gram but ≥ 10 grams of naturally occurring sugar per 8 fl oz serving vegetable juice that contain < 10 grams of naturally occurring sugars per 8 fl oz serving Milk with ≥ 10 grams of ACS per 8 fl oz serving Milk with < 10 grams of ACS per 8 oz serving Milk with ACS must not be consumed Ad-lib Milk substitutes with ≥ 10 gms of ACS per 8 oz serving Milk substitutes with < 10 gms of ACS per 8 oz serving Milk substitutes must not be consumed Ad-Lib Thank you, Poonam, for this!
