Back to our theme for today….. Your CPD – Making the Right Connections
17
Your CPD – Making the right connections
Making the right connections for CPD in 2011 will , hopefully, take your personal CPD to the next level. To start this, you should:- Firstly, reflect on what you personally want to achieve for your CPD during this year. Secondly, complete your ‘CPD Framework for 2011’….your plan for this year’s CPD activities.
18
A reminder of what the HPC expects and being ready if you are chosen to prove that you have met their expectations! HPC Standards for CPD
19
HPC Standards for CPD The five HPC CPD Standards:-
You must “maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of CPD activities”. This means:- Having a CPD plan or framework. Recording what you have learnt. Regularly adding to the evidence of your learning activities in your CPD portfolio. Maintaining a reflective journal….it proves that you’ve thought about what you’ve learnt.
20
HPC Standards for CPD 2. You must “demonstrate that CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice”. This means:- Having a variety of CPD activities such as meetings, reading journals, using the internet, learning from clients and colleagues. Following a plan or framework for your CPD plan based on your practice. Not just relying on attending meetings.……it won’t be enough!
21
HPC Standards for CPD 3. You must “ensure that CPD has contributed to the quality of your practice and service delivery” AND 4. “that your CPD benefits the service user”. These combine to mean that your CPD:- Should help to improve your professional practice. Should help produce even better outcomes for your clients.
22
HPC Standards for CPD 5. Finally, you must “present a written profile containing evidence of your CPD upon request” with a new addition by the HPC “it must be your own work”. Assume that you will be chosen for a CPD audit in 2012 and then every two years….failing a CPD audit means no registration and no job!
23
Your CPD – Making the right connections
So, what are these connections? They have something to do with all of these Connections between:- What the HPC as our regulator expects and the advice it publishes Professional body guidance and support Using 2011 to prepare for HPC CPD audits in 2012
24
Your CPD – Making the right connections
Today is about using the most important connections to help set up your 2011 CPD Framework. The 2011 CPD Framework I’m suggesting is deliberately different from what was suggested for a 2010 CPD Plan. The 2011 Framework template emphasises the connections between:- CPD activities CPD records in your portfolio Learning which benefits your practice and your clients
25
Your CPD – Making the right connections
The template for the 2011 CPD Framework is one of the handouts. To convert it to your CPD Framework for 2011 needs some careful thought based on:- What subject areas will give knowledge and skills which can help you become a more proficient and productive Dispenser. Using a variety of relevant information sources. The best method(s) for recording:- What you’ve learnt How you can use it to greatest effect in your daily practice Examples of how it has benefited clients or of why it didn’t.

Generic Intended Learning Outcome (ILO) – the general subject area. Suggested subjects – list of specific subjects from which you can choose or add your own. Possible CPD activities to achieve the ILO – just tick the box against the information sources you will use. Methods for recording specific learning outcomes – choose the method(s) which you feel will be the most appropriate for recording the connection between learning and benefit Example from six suggested options NAME:………………………… 2011 CPD FRAMEWORK Tick or otherwise indicate below if including for CPD in 2011 Generic Intended Learning Outcome (1) Keeping up to date with new developments in hearing aid technology Suggested subjects (select your choice) Hearing aid ranges from: Phonak/ReSound/Siemens/Starkey/Unitron/Widex DSP technologies: Directional microphones/Noise reduction systems/‘Open ear’ and RIC technologies/ Multiple listening programmes and acoustic environment analysis/ FM and Bluetooth technologies/ Datalogging and datalearning/ Frequency compression/ Ear to ear synchronisation Possible CPD activities to achieve the intended learning outcome Attendance at group meetings when presentations are made about new technologies or updates on existing technologies. Arranging 1:1 training sessions Reading relevant articles in professional journals or textbooks. Researching using the internet for any independent evidence about new or existing technologies. Discussion with colleagues to share knowledge and practical experience. Methods for recording specific learning outcomes and how both my practice and specific clients have benefited from the above CPD activities Completion of Reflective Learning Journal after attending group or 1:1 meetings. Completion of Reflective Learning Journal after reading relevant articles and textbooks or internet researching. Completion of Reflective Learning Journal after sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues. After the fitting of hearing aids, writing up my reflections/thoughts on positive or negative outcomes using my Reflective Journal. After the fitting of hearing aids, writing up my reflections/thoughts on positive or negative outcomes by completing a Case Study. Preparing a paper/article for distribution amongst colleagues or for use in training others or for publication in a professional journal. Other (please detail)

There are six suggested Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILO). Each one has a different set of specific subjects to choose from but add any which are missing but which interest you. The selection of CPD activities as learning sources and the possible methods of recording those learnings are identical for each GILO. The second handout lists the six suggested GILOs and a selection of specific subjects. If you find the template useful, you can add your own GILOs and specific subjects.
