Net Force
2
In tug of war, what side will win and how do you know?
3
-Total amount of force acting on an object.
Net Force -Total amount of force acting on an object. -More than one force can be exerted on an object at one time.
4
Example In this example, both boys are pulling in the same direction.
If forces are in the same direction, add them together! The net force is ___ Newtons to the _____!
5
Example When an object has a net force greater than 0, this is called an UNBALANCED force. It will cause a change in motion! 0 Newtons
6
Example It requires 2 people to push a large refrigerator across the floor. If one of the people can push with 80 Newtons of force, and the 2nd person can push with a force of 70 Newtons, then what is the net force they can push? If it takes 151 N to move the refrigerator, will they be able to move it?
7
Example In this example, force is being exerted in different directions. Which side will win the tug of war? How do you know?
8
Example To find the net force when forces are in OPPOSITE directions, SUBTRACT the values!
9
Example 500 N N= 50 N But in what direction??
10
Example To the LEFT because the force is greater to the right
11
Example In this example, what do you think will happen?
12
Example Nothing! The forces are BALANCED. 200 N-200 N = 0
Therefore, no movement will happen! The kitties will continue to just sit.
13
Challenge! What is the net force of this object and in what direction is it moving?
