5. 9th Grade CCR College and Career Readiness Conference
The CCR is a process whereby students establish and review academic progress. We also review goals for college and career readiness.
MPJ Counselors meet with 7th grade students in small group conferences.
Counselors meet yearly with 8th and 9th grade students and parent/guardians to plan and prepare for high school graduation, post high school education and future careers.

6. Advisory/Panther Time
Monday – Advisory – Students report to their assigned Advisory class for the last 30 minutes of the day. With a schoolwide focus on literacy, students will read for the first 15 minutes. For the remainder of the time, students will use a current Status Report and plan for their upcoming Panther Time days.
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday- Panther Time – Students visit any teacher to receive additional help, finish assignments, retake tests or participate in silent reading.

7. Citizenship Makeup
If you receive a “U” in citizenship on your report card it must be made up. A requirement of 4 hours of service and a $5.00 fee per “U” is required for all students.

11. Additional College Requirements:
Some colleges and universities may have admission requirement that are different from high school graduation requirements. The courses listed below are traditionally recommended or required for college bound students:
4 years of English
4 years of Math
3 or 4 years of Science (at least one science must be a lab)
2 years of a foreign language
3 years of Social Studies

12. MPJ Honors Program
Mueller Park Junior High offers an outstanding honors program
for students with exceptional ability, academic commitment and who
desire a more challenging curriculum.
Participation in honors level classes at the junior high level can
help students prepare for more rigorous high school courses.
Students enrolled in honors classes should have advanced reading and writing skills. The classes will move at a rapid pace.

13. On Line High School Opportunities
Utah Students Connect for 9th – 12th Grades
The Davis School District 9-12 program allows you to attend your boundary school and earn original credit to increase flexibility in your schedule or to graduate early. Classes are accessed through a learning management system, Canvas.
There are a wide variety of subjects offered. Courses are provided at little or no cost. Students must sign up through their school counselor.

14. Things to remember about on line classes
On line classes take time (approximately 200 hours spent on a one credit class).
Classes are rigorous.
Students work at their own pace within deadlines.
Students need to be motivated and self directed.
High school classes can be used toward graduation.

15. Foreign language requirements
Taking a foreign language is not a requirement to graduate from the Davis School District.
Foreign language is required to be admitted to some universities.
The University of Utah has a two year foreign language requirement Level 1and 2 language classes (consecutive) may be taken in grades 7 – 12.
Many schools outside of Utah require more than two years of a consecutive foreign language.
Plan ahead and don’t miss out on an out-of-state college opportunity because you did not meet their admissions requirements.

16. Scholarship opportunities
New Century Scholarship: Students must complete the requirements for an associate degree or its equivalent through a state institution of higher education while in high school.
Centennial Scholarship: Students must graduate early from high school with 27 credits. The state awards funds at a graduating scale depending on how early the student graduates.
Regent’s Scholarship: The Regents Scholarship encourages Utah high school students to prepare for college academically and financially by taking a rigorous course of study and saving for college.

18. NCAA Requirements
Students entering a Division I collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2008, must meet the 16 core course rule.

19. POST HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION
So many choices:

20. Do you want to get into a top university?
In 9th grade start by taking a challenging course load. You will want to take 4 years of math, science, English, social studies, and in most cases 2 years of foreign language to be most competitive.
Honors classes in 9th Grade are Honors English, Honors Secondary Math 1, Honors Secondary Math 11, and AP Human Geography.
Biology is not an honors course but a 10th grade class. High schools recommend that students enrolled in Biology have successfully completed Honors Secondary Math 1.

21. Nuames
The Northern Utah Academy of Math, Engineering and Science (NUAMES) is a grade ten through twelve public charter high school that specializes in preparing high school students for an early transition into a university baccalaureate program in fields related to math, engineering or science. NUAMES is located in Layton.

22. International Baccalaureate
International Baccalaureate (IB) is a highly respected, rigorous, high school academic program. Students that graduate with an IB diploma earn college or university credit, are given top consideration for acceptance and scholarships in national and international colleges and universities, and gain an international perspective in their courses of study. The IB Program is located at Bountiful and Clearfield High Schools.

23. Testing PLAN (Soph) – Practice test to prepare for the ACT.
ACT (Jr or sr) – Entrance test for college. May take more than once. Accepted by all Utah Schools.
PSAT (soph or jr) – National merit test. It allows students to compete in a national scholarship competition. It is usually given in October.
SAT I and SAT II (jr or sr) – Achievement tests required by many out of state universities and colleges.
Asvab – Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. There is no cost for this test.
Sage tests – end of level tests required by the state in core classes.
AP Tests – A series of tests in the subject area for possible college credit given in May.

24. Academic core make up credit
High school (9th – 12th grades) students who receive an “f” in English, Math, Science and/or Social Studies need to make up these credits in order to graduate from high school. Each term a student earns .25 credit (per class) with a passing grade. If they fail a class they will be short .25 graduation credits (per term) towards graduation.
High schools request that all credit lost during junior high school be made up prior to the start of 10th grade.

25. 9th Grade Citizenship Make-Up
High school students who have received a “U” in citizenship need to make up the credit in order to graduate from high school. If you received a “U” while at MPJH please contact:

Cost: $5.00 per “U”
Service Hours 4 hours per “U”
Service hours must be approved by Mrs. Freckleton before they are completed. When you make up a “U”, citizenship credit will be restored but the “U” will remain on your transcript.

By taking AP coures and passing the final examination with a grade of 3, 4, or 5 students may receive college credit.
Concurrent enrollment:
Numerous college classes are offered at Bountiful and woods cross high schools giving high school students WSU, SLCC or USU credit.

28. High school internship program
Through the internship program, 11th and 12th grade students have the opportunity to experience the world of work. The requirements are to clear all citizenship “U”s, have a career interest, have transportation, submit an application at least one semester in advance, and register for the internship with your school counselor.
