We want to put up some sign posts around school to help the new Year 7’s

3. We want to find out the following distances

Ask students how we might find out these distances. Hopefully they will decide that they could measure the distances within school but would need to use the internet for the others.

4. Distances within the school
What equipment will we need? What units will these measurements be in?
Get students to think about these two questions. Then give each group one of the six tables (see end of power point) so they are all measuring from different places in the school. Make sure they know they just need to fill in the ‘m’ column for now. Let them go and make their measurements, give them a time to be back in the classroom.

5. Distances beyond the school
What equipment will we need? Where might we find this information? What units will these measurements be in?
Get students to think about these questions. Show how to use google earth.

Students should now convert their measures so that all three columns are filled in. Explain how to convert between m, km and miles

7. Design your signposts
Give your measurement in what you think is the most appropriate unit. WRITE ON THE BACK OF EACH WHERE YOU MEASURED FROM SO WE KNOW WHERE THE SIGN POST NEEDS TO GO!
Make sure students write on the back where they were measuring from so I know where to put the signposts up! Template is on next slide to give them an idea.
