Blended approach to Foundation Trainee preparation for the ARCP process Dr B Langham, Mrs H Breed, Dr N Spittle, Dr R Gregory
2
Aim: To reduce the risk of Foundation Trainees receiving an outcome 5 following the introduction of the ARCP process for Foundation Training.
3
Previously : Four categories:
Trainees with satisfactory progress and full set of evidence. Trainees with satisfactory progress but missing evidence. Trainees with unsatisfactory progress. Trainees with ‘probable’ satisfactory progress, but no engagement with the e-portfolio.
4
Learning styles: Considered work by: Bloom Gagné Honey and Mumford
Race
5
Strategy: Three ingredients:
Standard power point slide set for use of FTPDs. VLE ARCP module. Frequently asked questions. All complimenting the UKFPO ARCP guide.
6
Objectives Understand the ARCP process. Understand the evidence required for satisfactory ARCP outcome. Understand the outcomes for FY1 and FY2 doctors.
7
Power point slide set consisting of 11 slides an covering the topics:
The Tools: Power point slide set consisting of 11 slides an covering the topics: What is the ARCP? What is the ARCP process? What evidence is required for a satisfactory outcome? What are the outcomes for FY1? What are the outcomes for FY2?
8
Evidence All evidence required by the Foundation School sign off policy must be present in the e-portfolio. A Trainee must have demonstrated attainment and maintenance of required level of competence. The Trainee must have spend one full year in programme.
9
Outcomes for FY2s: Outcome 6 will be the most frequent outcome.
Outcome 5 – at this point in time the trainee will be issued with a letter from the chair of the panel (FTPD) with 10 working days notice to provide all evidence prior to the panel resitting.
10
The Tools Virtual learning environment module:
Reinforced message from face to face delivery using: Visual Audio Interactivity Same areas covered as face to face power point presentation.
11
Important questions What is an ARCP? What do I need to do?
What outcomes may I receive? Foundation Year 1 Trainees Foundation Year 2 Trainees
12
Foundation Year 1 trainees ARCP outcomes
There are 4 outcomes that a FY1 trainee may receive after an ARCP panel review of their e-portfolio. Click on each number to understand more about the outcome:
13
Frequently asked Questions:
The Tools Frequently asked Questions: Eight questions in total, this is an example of one area: Outcome 5 This outcome is awarded when an e-Portfolio does not contain all the required evidence as set down in the F1 /F2 Sign off Policy. At this point in time the ARCP panel will assign a trainee an outcome 5, which will be recorded in the e portfolio and remain as evidence for the future. The panel will set a revised deadline for completion of the e-portfolio and associated evidence. If, on the revised deadline all evidence is submitted in the e-portfolio an Outcome 1 will be recorded alongside the Outcome 5 in the e-portfolio, but the Outcome 5 will remain in the e-portfolio.
14
How will we know it has worked?
15
Any Questions?
16
Summary Aim: minimise the number of outcome 5s.
Used educational theory to develop a plan. Plan consisted of National resource plus three locally produced resources: Power point slide set for face to face delivery. Interactive module for the VLE. Frequently asked questions.
