TOPICS TO BE COVERED Classification of Semiconductors
Elemental semiconductors Compound semiconductors Intrinsic semiconductor Doping Extrinsic semiconductor
3
LEARNING OBJECTIVE Students should be able to:
Classify semiconductor material into different types Explain doping Differentiate between doping and dopants
4
CLASSIFICATION OF SEMICONDUCTORS
On the bases of composition: i) Elemental semiconductors: Si and Ge ii) Compound semiconductors: Inorganic: GaAs, CdS, GaAsP, etc. Organic: anthracene, doped pthalocyanines, etc. Organic polymers: polypyrrole, polyaniline, polythiophene, etc.
5
CLASSIFICATION OF SEMICONDUCTORS
On the bases of the presence of added impurities: i) Intrinsic semiconductors - Ge, Si ii) Extrinsic semiconductors: N-type: Pentavalent dopants - Sb, As & P P-type: Trivalent dopants - B, Ga, and In
