2 Shall We Continue in Sin ?
Romans 6:1-7 “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:” Romans 5:20

3 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

4 God Forbids It - v. 2 “God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” Let it not be Perish the thought By no means It may not be

Obituaries list the names of people who have died. Repentance demands death to sin

6 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Col. 3:5 6

7 God has forbidden sin no exceptions no special license to sin
“The soul who sins shall die” Ezek 18:4 “The wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23

God Forbids It - v. 2

9 Knowledge Forbids It - v.3
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” “Or are ye ignorant”

10 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new II Cor. 5:17 10

11 “Baptized into His death” Knowledge Forbids It - v.3
Old self died to sin Baptism puts us into Christ He died for our sins We die to sin Knowledge Forbids It - v.3

12 The Christian’s Resurrection forbids It - v.4-5
4. “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

13 “Buried by baptism” Baptism is a burial, immersion
Momentarily buried in water Christ died on Calvary We die to our sins Baptism is end of a life of sin

14 “Christ raised” God raised Him We are raised from baptism
To walk no more in sin A new life - different

15 “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:” V.5 Planted = united in death United also in resurrection

No ! We have died and been resurrected to a new way of life.

17 The Sinner’s Crucifixion forbids It - v.6-7
6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

18 “old man crucified with Him”
Former self was sinful Gal. 2:20 Eph. 4:22-24 Put off the old man Put on the new man

19 “body of sin destroyed”
Old body is dead Col. 3:9 Every time a person becomes a Christian, a sinner dies No longer a slave to sin

20 “dead is freed from sin”
Released, delivered from sin Died with Christ Can no longer live in sin

21 “crucified with Christ”
Crucifixion is slow, painful No easy way to separate from that old man of sin Slow and painful Sin must be destroyed

22 1.Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1 Pet. 4:1-2
