Mantegna’s Crucifixion: Symbolism
Using two of these features, explain in your book what you have learned about Jesus death, from looking closely at the painting. **What is the painting teaching you, about the way to heaven? Look at where the road to heaven starts from. Mantegna’s Crucifixion: Symbolism El Greco’s Agony in the Garden, was quite surreal – dreamlike, visionary, not realistic. Mantegna’s crucifixion is not realistic but in a different, symbolic way. On your sheet, write the answers to the following: Platform of crucifixion – what else is it like? Dead trees, Mountains – what feel do they give to the painting? How you you describe them? The city in the background – what could it be? What other place could it symbolise? The road to the city – what could it symbolise? The sky – what do you notice about it? Market place, Stage, altar, gravestone? Jagged, tall, difficult, painful, foreboding - death Jerusalem? Heaven? The way to heaven? Starts with Jesus? Daytime. Lighter further away – why? Unsettling regularity of clouds – planned?

1. Complete the sheet you have been given. In your book, write up two things you have learned about Jesus’ crucifixion from answering the sheet. **What was new/ surprising to you about what you found out? Teach your partner about your topic – composition or character. Repeat with a different partner. 3. Write up in your book 2 things about what they have taught you about their topic.
