9 Ask your partner… Think back in history… What caused such nationalism to develop in European countries that we have learned about in history?

Objective: Argue which factor contributed most to the outbreak of WWI and justify your reasons with factual information. BR: How does imperialism promote nationalism and militarism?

13 Bismarck Forges Early Pacts
• Germany’s Otto von Bismarck works to keep peace in Europe after 1871 • Believes France wants revenge for loss in 1870 Franco-Prussian War • Seeks to isolate the French with a series of treaties and alliances: - signs treaty with Russia in 1881 - forms Triple Alliance—Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy—in 1882

14

15

16 Shifting Alliances Threaten Peace
• Kaiser Wilhelm II becomes German ruler in 1888 • Foreign policy changes begin in 1890 with dismissal of Bismarck - alliance with Russia was dropped; Russia then allies with France - began an effort to strengthen German navy, which alarms Britain • Britain, France, Russia form Triple Entente alliance in 1907 NEXT

This organization prefers terrorist action to cultural activities; it will therefore remain secret."

25 Exit Ticket: Answer and turn into your class box on your way out of the door.
What 3 nations belonged to the Triple Entente? What 3 nations belonged to the Triple Alliance? What nation annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908? What nation’s heir to the throne was assassinated in 1914 by a Serbian nationalist? Based on your knowledge thus far, choose which you believed helped the most to set the stage for World War I—nationalism, imperialism, militarism, or the alliance system?
