1 What is extremism? What is radicalisation? What is an ideology?

2 How can we build resilience against extremist ideas?
Learning objective: to understand what extremism is, why some people might hold extreme opinions and how to be vigilant against extreme ideas. L4: to be able to identify examples of extremism/extremist ideology. L5: to be able to explain why some people might develop extremist ideologies. L6: to suggest and evaluate appropriate ways of dealing with extremist ideas.

3 What have we considered:
Society is made up of many communities/groups. Many communities/groups are diverse. Diverse groups have many differing views within them. Wider society is therefore very diverse and there are many views with complex reasons. People have different ways of approaching and dealing with issues and their approach depends on many factors related to their ideas or experiences. Making decisions as a group is very difficult and means some people will feel ‘disengaged’ or angry. Some people who are disengaged or angry might react in ways that are considered extreme or hold extreme ideologies.

TASK A: Watch the following video clip: Identify what you think makes these people extreme. (emotions/feelings/perceptions of society) EXT: How do they go about making peace?

TASK B: Create a leaflet educating younger people about extremism. Include: Explanation about society and communities being diverse. Examples of issues that people might disagree over. How someone might become extreme or radical in their views. Suggestions on what to do to prevent radicalisation.
