1.3 Fast tracking the release of more pigeon pea varieties
ICRISAT provided 3 kg of each of the 5 test varieties for multi-location trials. Additionally, through ZARI, 9 PVS sites were planted in Eastern province in 3 districts to supplement to the NPTs by SCCI. The performance of the test lines is promising in the 9 trial sites. 17
21
2.0 Promotion of complimentary agronomic practices
2.1 Farmer sensitization on groundnut production farmers were briefed on improved agronomic technologies and aflatoxin mitigation measures for groundnuts. Emphasis was on; Planting with the first effective rains Planting at recommended planting spacing (10 cm apart between stations) and double row per ridge on ridges spaced 60 cm apart etc. 18

2.2 Demonstration of best agronomic practices for groundnut
community seed bank concept was used to up-scale the best agronomic practices such as double row planting per ridge. 4100 Kg of certified seed was supplied to the communities. Each farmer was given 10 kg of seed on loan to pay back 20 Kg. The seed supplied benefited 188 men and 288 women across the project sites. 20
24
3.0 Support seed companies to commercialize legume seed production
Linkages have been established with Afriseed and Cargill for possible commercialization of legume seed production. MOUs are currently being worked on to close the deal. Eastern Legume Seed Alliance has been formed to facilitate legume seed information sharing 21
25
4.0 Monitoring of crop development
ZARI Msekera and ICRISAT technicians monitored progress and achievements across all project sites in early January 2016. The major challenge observed was the impact of late onset of the rain and erratic nature both, which affected planting time and poor crop establishment. Less than 40 % of rains was received last season 22
26
5.0 Staff recruitment and office establishment at ZARI-Msekera
IITA has recruited 3 members of staff to assist in running project activities under theme one. The office has been established at ZARI- Msekera Research station in Chipata. 23
27
6.0 Improve ZARI's storage and irrigation facilities
Activity to improve irrigation system and storage facility at ZARI-Msekera is still underway and will possibly be accomplished by the end of this fiscal year. 24

30
Reasons for under-achievements
Severe drought at the beginning of the rain season affected plant germination as well as the crop performance . Inadequate or absence of both breeder and basic seed Absence of staff on the ground at the beginning of the rain season. 27
31
Assessment towards achieving the objective of the theme
More work to be done to ensure that enough foundation as well as certified seeds are multiplied. More awareness campaigns, farmer training and demos need to be carried out as well. Seed alliance (ELSA) & partnerships with the private need sector need to be strengthened 28
32
Seed Alliance triggered interest as a Forum
Lessons learned Farmer sensitization meetings helped to encourage farmers receive project activities and exercise ownership. Most farmers in the target districts are very excited and have shown interest to invest and participate in legume seed production. use of a bait to provide seed loans encouraged farmers to use best bet agronomic practices. Seed Alliance triggered interest as a Forum 29
