1 Report on WFA LTE-U Workshop
July 2009 doc.: IEEE /0840r0 Report on WFA LTE-U Workshop Date: Authors: David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

2 Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Abstract Report on: Wi-Fi Alliance workshop on LTE-U, November 4, 2015, Palo Alto, CA, USA David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

3 Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Workshop Purpose 1. Share information about mechanisms to ensure LTE-U shares unlicensed spectrum fairly with Wi-Fi 2. Update each other on LTE-U coexistence requirements, parameters, test approaches, test plans, test programs 3. Share information about the testing that the community plans for LTE-U equipment and services, including how that testing will be offered and conducted 4. Seek areas of agreement, gaps, and areas for further work David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

4 Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Workshop overview The workshop was hosted by the Wi-Fi Alliance, with attendance open to anyone with interest in the affected communities (within constraints of the room capacity) Logistics: November 4, 2015; 9:00am – 5:00pm, Sheraton Palo Alto, CA Materials are all publicly available here (no NDA): Approx. 130 attendees, from 68 companies. Also attended by Ira Keltz, FCC, Deputy Chief David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

5 Presentation: WFA Coexistence Guidelines
Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Presentation: WFA Coexistence Guidelines Presentation of v1.0 of the WFA’s coexistence guidelines: Outline the analysis and study of the issues Results will be used for further discussion and as a baseline understanding of how a test plan can be crafted.  This is work in progress, and future phase topics were proposed. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

6 Presentation: WFA Test Plan
Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Presentation: WFA Test Plan “Wi-Fi Alliance has stated it seeks to have every LTE-U device tested for fair coexistence” Intent is to be able to test LTE-U equipment for coexistence behaviors, that are believed to be the important criteria based on the coexistence studies. WFA presented an outline of WFA’s test plan, so far (work in progress).  Key items presented: difficulty of repeatable testing for below ED and complex scenarios, as well as differences identified between Wi-Fi Alliance test plan and posted LTE-U Forum test plan. Still quite a few “TBD”s, and more tests to be added - requested help to developed one harmonized test plan for the industry Left open, for now, how or where the testing happens David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

7 Presentations: LTE-U members
Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Presentations: LTE-U members Presentations by members of the LTE-U Forum describing LTE-U coexistence Focus on “Carrier Sense Adaptive Transmission” (CSAT) – now captured in a Tech Spec Also discussed updated LTE-U coexistence specification (which includes tests), v1.3 Also discussed testing done by LTE-U members – methods and results These changes/new materials were partly in response to comments from the Wi-Fi community, and partly to address future transition from LTE-U to LAA Agreed recent changes to the LTE-U spec are positive. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

8 Presentations: Other companies
Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Presentations: Other companies Presentations by other companies, not in the LTE-U Forum Methods and results of their testing/studies and their ongoing concerns around LTE-U coexistence Noted that these results and the LTE-U members’ results above, have disparities David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

9 Jan 2009 doc.: IEEE /1455r0 Outcome and next steps Discussion was held at the end of the meeting to review.  See, especially, the Closing presentation in the slides. Agreed that this was a good information exchange, and more is needed.  Agreed testing should be harmonized, and we should work in collaboration. No specific logistics have been worked out yet – stay tuned.  It is clear that LTE-U Forum members have been working off-line in response to comments received. Indications in the room were that they will continue.  So, while no immediate action recommendation for this week, the Wi-Fi community needs to get/stay involved, and participate in all these activities as they go forward David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.
