2 Matter All objects are made of matter.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space! Matter is made of particles called atoms which are too small to see. (Copy into notes)

3 Not Everything is Matter
Light and sound are not matter Light does not take up space or have mass in the way a table does Air is made up of atoms, but a sound traveling through air is not made of atoms (Copy into notes)

4 Mass Mass is a measure of how much matter an object contains
Standard unit of mass is the kilogram (kg) Smaller masses are usually measured in grams (g) (Copy into notes)

5 Weight Weight is the downward pull of an object due to gravity
Weight is measured using a scale, such as a spring scale Standard unit for weight is the newton (N) Common unit for weight is the pound (lb) (Copy into notes)

6 Volume Volume is a measure of the space matter occupies
Matter takes up space, therefore, matter has volume Matter can be measured by displacement or using the volume formula (Copy into notes)

7 Volume of Well-defined Shapes
Volume = length •width •height Volume is measured in cubic units All measurements must be in the same unit to calculate the volume using the formula (Copy into notes)

8 Finding the Volume Find the volume of a pizza box that is 8 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 38 cm long. (Complete the problem)

9 Using the Formula A bar of gold is 10 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 7 cm high. What is its volume? (Complete the problem)

Irregularly shaped objects’ volume can be measured by water displacement using a graduated cylinder First, add water to the graduated cylinder and note its volume Next, submerge the irregularly shaped object and note the new volume with the object Subtract the initial volume from the volume with the object included to find the volume of the object (Copy into notes)

Volume by displacement is measured in milliliters (mL) 1 milliliter is equal to 1 cubic centimeter 1 mL = 1 cc or 1cm3 Be sure to read the volume of the liquid at the bottom of the curve, which is called the meniscus. (Copy into notes)

22 Density Density – is a measure of the amount of matter present (mass) in a given volume of a substance To calculate the density of an object, you divide the mass of the object by its volume D = m/v Standard unit of measure for density is g/cm3 or g/mL (Copy into notes)

23 Calculating Density Use the formula: d = m/v to find the density of a marble whose volume is 5 cm3 and a mass of 13 grams. – Complete problem in notes
