THANK YOU We could not have achieved the following successes without the generous financial support of the Township of McNab/Braeside. I’d also like to recognize Mayor Tom Peckett for his time attending student/resident lunches to help sell the community, as well as attending our monthly PRC meetings. Your contributions are most appreciated. Mayor Tom Peckett with Arthur Ching (PGY1) and PRC Chair Mark Nibourg (right)

We had 2 new physicians start in August, Dr. Michael Fishman (right) and Dr. Hang Shi, who will take over for Dr. Robson in family practice, and in the OR. They will both be taking additional patients from the community in early 2017. Dr. Fishman met us originally at a career fair paid for by PRC, and after completing a residency rotation decided to join our team. Dr. Shi was recruited from one of my job postings at the University of Toronto.

2016 Highlights September saw the completion of a newly renovated 6 physician office suite in the PHCC. This is a major factor in our being able to recruit new physicians. Thanks to ARH for their million dollar investment to ensuring excellent primary health care in our community.

We had 15 students through from Jan to Oct 2016, including 8 residents. We had one resident come back a second time this summer because he had a good experience last year, and could gain more hospitalist experience than in other locations. He also expressed interest in OR and ER exposure.

Here are some of the things they had to say about their experience:
I had an excellent experience during my rural rotation at the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. The team was very supportive and accommodated my learning needs. I would highly recommend it as a fun and comprehensive rural rotation to any resident or medical student. Dr. Nadine Kaefer PGY2 who is covering a maternity leave locum for Dr. Becker During my rotation, I was fortunate to work with and learn from a fantastic preceptor who worked in many different clinical settings. I definitely developed competencies in a variety of clinical skills important to being a family doctor who provides comprehensive care. At the same time, I gained an understanding of the unique challenges and rewards offered by a career in family medicine in a rural community like Arnprior. Dr. Arthur Ching PGY1

Current Status We have hired 2 new physicians who will be taking new patients in the new year, and have a strong potential for another to begin early in the new year as well. This would help to ensure we meet our goal of ensuring that every local resident has access to a local primary care physician. We are continuing to post our jobs and attend career fairs to attract new candidates as the recruiting cycle is very long – often a year to 3 years before they actually begin work. We have a large number of physicians who are getting close to retirement, two of whom have announced their retirement in the next 2-3 years. With a long recruiting cycle it is important to keep up our recruitment efforts now to ensure we are able to transition their patients to new doctors as well.

Financial Summary We are currently on or under budget in all areas.
Our financial goal for the Fashion Show and Doctor’s Dining Duel fundraisers will bring in an additional $7,000. Our budget for 2017 allows for the hiring of one additional physician. With ARH’s completion of the new office space, incentive costs will be minimal. PRC’s budget for recruitment initiatives for 2017 will total $50,000. This includes the Physician Recruitment Coordinator role, attendance at 3 events, the continuation of student lunches, where we get an opportunity as a committee to speak to the students/residents one on one about their plans for permanent practices, and support to hire one additional physician.
