3 During the tests: Except for the reading test, all pupils can ask the staff present to read a question to them as many times as needed Staff can’t explain the meanings of words or re-word anything in the test, they can only read the exact wording, they can’t remind pupils of anything either e.g. do you remember when we used Numicon to…, staff can’t explain the meaning of a word e.g. What does reflect mean? All required equipment is provided – pupils do not need to bring any additional equipment, there is a list of required equipment for each test from the DFE which must be followed, no additional equipment is allowed, in some tests this has included rubbers – pupils are expected to put a line through their work and re-write answers Reminders of the amount of time left will be provided to pupils throughout the test

4 Last year and in previous years pupils have been given levels such as a Level 3,4 or 5 with level 4 being the national expectation for pupils in Y6 to meet. This has now changed. -Levels no longer exist and are not reported to parents -The curriculum is now very different so we can’t convert new score in to the old levels The new tests will be marked externally and a scaled score will be provided for each pupil. Schools do not know what the pass mark is, the SATs papers will be marked, average scores will be found and then a pass mark will be decided by the DFE. -Barriers With not knowing a pass mark pupils are not aware whether they are meeting required standards or how many more marks are needed to get there: All schools nationally are in the same position.

5 Preparing pupils for the tests:
-Breakfast club for Y6 will be run providing cereals, toast and drinks to help settle pupils in the morning before moving to complete the tests. -Some pupils will be completing the tests in rooms with less people to aid concentration -Classrooms will look very different, nothing is allowed to be displayed – this must all be covered or removed so there are no prompts for pupils when sitting tests -Pupils have been completing old papers to highlight areas of strength and areas for development when in a test situation. There is only one example of the new tests available which pupils have also accessed -Wednesday after school Maths groups
