INTELLIGENT ENERGY SAVING SYSTEM USING PIC MICROCONTROLLER

ABSTRACT Intelligent energy saving system can be used in places like where energy is very important such as libraries or seminar hall which is well illuminated with many lamps. When people are not present at a reading place the lighting can be made off and when they are present, the lighting made on. All these can be done through by PIC microcontroller and PIR sensor. If a person entering to the monitored area, the infrared energy emitted from the living body is focused by a Fresnel lens segment present in the PIR sensor and then the PIR sensor activates and send signal to the PIC micro controller which in turn switches on the electrical equipments present in the room using the relay. Soon after the person leaves the room, the PIR sensor senses the absence of the human and again sends a signal to the PIC micro controller which in turn switches off the electrical equipments automatically. All the instruments used in this project consume less power and by this way the energy is being saved.

OBJECTIVE The aim of our project is: To save energy.
To reduce human stress. Wireless communication between human and the electrical instrument.

Need for the project To reduce the Scarcity of electricity by automatic on/off method. To overcome the existing manual ON/OFF system.

EXISTING METHOD The existing system is controlled by a switch which is to be switched off properly by a individual during his absence.

PROPOSED METHOD Automatic controlling . Eliminates manual control.
Reduces the wastage of electrical energy.

Power supply Two transformers are used
5v transformer is used for PIC and 5A relay. 9v transformer is used for 13A relay which is being added to drive the air conditioner.

PIR Sense the presence and absence of human
Sends signal to the CMOS inverter. The range of PIR is 14m. Conditions for PIR Human presence Human absence

Human presence When a person enters the seminar hall, the infrared radiation is focused by Fresnel lens of the PIR sensor. The output of the PIR sensor is LOW. The output of PIR sensor is fed into the CMOS inverter.

Human absence The absence of the person in the room is detected by the PIR sensor. The output of the PIR sensor is high and it is fed into the CMOS inverter.

HIGH SPEED CMOS INVERTER - 1
Works as a NOT gate. Converts the low output of the PIR after human detection into high and transmit this signal to PIC. At the absence of human the output high from the PIR is converted into low and transmit this signal to PIC.

PIC After receiving the high signal from the CMOS inverter, the PIC microcontroller produces a low signal output and sends the low signal to the CMOS inverter and the transistor array energizes the relay therefore the loads are turned on. After receiving the low signal from the CMOS inverter ,the PIC microcontroller produces a high signal output and sends the high signal to the CMOS inverter therefore the transistor array de-energize the relay .Therefore the loads are switched off automatically by the PIC microcontroller.

HIGH SPEED CMOS INVERTER - 2
To boost up the signal from the PIC the CMOS inverters are used. It works as a NOT gate to boost up the signal.

TRANSISTOR ARRAY Works as a relay drive.
The transistor array used in this project is ULN2003A which is a monolithic high-voltage, high-current Darlington transistor arrays.

RELAY The relay used in this project is an electromagnetic relay and it acts as a switch. There are eight 5A relays placed in this project were 2 relays are used as secondary relays and a single 13A relay which drives the air conditioner. The relay is energized and de – energized by the micro controller.

LOAD The loads of this project are lights, fans and air conditioners.

SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION

MPLAB SOFTWARE The software tool used in this project is MPLAB IDE which is a Windows Operating System (OS). The software program that runs on a PC to develop applications for Microchip microcontrollers and digital signal controllers. It is called an Integrated Development Environment or IDE.

EMBEDDED C The Embedded system under which the project is being undergone is typically a design making use of the power of a small microcontroller, like the Microchip PIC. The microcontrollers combine a microprocessor unit with some additional circuits called "peripherals", plus some additional circuits on the same chip to make a small control module requiring few other external devices. This single device can then be embedded into other electronic and mechanical devices for low-cost digital control.
