1 7E1.6 Pollution

2 Pollution Pollution is the contamination of land, water, or air.
Pollution can be caused by natural or human sources. It is important to keep levels low to provide a safe and healthy environment.

3 Types of Pollution Natural Substances Radon Pollen Mold spores Dust
Man-made Substances Burning fossil fuels (driving) Smoking Leaving behind garbage Transportation Industrial wastes **these can all add particles to the air Natural Substances Radon Pollen Mold spores Dust Volcanic eruptions

4 Smog Smog is a mixture of smoke, fog, and chemicals.
Usually occur in big cities, especially LA and Mexico City. Causes irritants to the lungs and respiratory problems.

5 Acid Rain Is the mixture of pollution in the water vapor up in the atmosphere. The mixture then falls in locations that are not at the same location of the air pollutant. Can come from both natural and man-made pollutants.

6 Measuring pollution Technology has helped to monitor the amount of air pollution and the quality of the air. This information provides measures to help protect the health of humans and individuals.

7 Global Concerns Monitoring air quality includes the measures of the following pollutants, around the globe: Ozone depletion Air Pollution Increased particulate matter Acid rain Global Warming

8 EPA In the US, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) monitors the health of pollution in the water, air, and soil. They help to enforce the laws to help maintain the health of our systems and provide daily information about air quality.

9 Local Weather Channels
Local weather channels issue localized atmosphere health reports using the following graph: ** AQI- Air Quality Index

10

11 Prevention The best way to reduce the amount of pollution is to use less fossil fuel.
