2 Fractions Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJgHmx8bvWI Starter
LO: to recap on fractions ½, 1/3 and ¼. . Fractions Story

3 LO: to measure weight using non-standard units
LO: to measure weight using non-standard units. I will pass around some parcels and we will find which one is the heaviest and which one is the lightest. Before we begin, let’s see if you can guess which one is the lightest and which one is the heaviest.

4 LO: to measure weight using non-standard units
LO: to measure weight using non-standard units. We can measure weight using balancing scales. We put things on each side of the scale. Following this, we can look and see where it moves. Let’s look at some examples.

5 LO: to measure weight using non standard units. Which is heavier
LO: to measure weight using non standard units. Which is heavier? You know by looking at the balancing scale. Whichever one goes to the bottom, that one is the heaviest. Feather Pencil

6 LO: to measure weight using non standard units. Which is heavier?

7 LO: to measure weight using non standard units. Which is lighter?

8 How many cubes does it take to balance the scales?
LO: to measure weight using non standard units. How many cubes does it take to balance the scales?

9 We can use lots of different things to measure weight.
LO: to measure weight using non standard units. We can use lots of different things to measure weight.

10 LO: to measure weight using non standard units.
Your task: Pick some things from your pencil case. Estimate, how many cubes we will need to balance the scales. Following this, let’s use the balancing scale to measure

11 LO: to measure weight using non standard units.
Plenary: Heavier or lighter? Listen to your teacher. What is heavier? What is lighter?

12 Maths Week 6 Term 3 Lesson 2

13 Starter LO: to measure weight using a balancing scales. Weighted balance. Use the online balance to make the scales balance.

14 LO: to estimate and measure weight using standard units.
Which object weighs more?

15 Early one morning, Brian Bear went fishing to catch himself some breakfast.

16 Very soon, he had caught himself three tasty fish

17 A small one, a medium one and a big one.

18 Brian decided to weigh the fish to find out which was the heaviest.

19 Brian put the big fish on one plate and some stones on the other plate.

20 The plates were even. The big fish weighed five stones.

21 Brian put the medium fish on one plate and some stones on the other plate.

22 The plates were even. The medium fish weighed four stones.

23 Brian put the small fish on one plate and some stones on the other plate.

24 The plates were even. The small fish weighed just two stones.

25 The small fish is light. The medium fish is heavy…but the big fish is the heaviest!

26 I will eat the biggest and heaviest fish!

27 Just then Brian caught another fish.

28 It wasn’t as big as the big fish…but Brian weighed it anyway.

29 Brian put the new fish on one plate and some stones on the other plate.

30 The plates were even. The fish weighed SIX stones!

31 The new fish was heavier than the biggest fish. How could that be?

32 Now I know that the biggest fish isn’t always the heaviest.

33 And the smallest isn’t always the lightest. How strange.

34 I’m going to carry on fishing and weighing
I’m going to carry on fishing and weighing. Why don’t you try some weighing too?

35 Lighter than an apple Heavier than an apple Your task today: Pair work
Using your whiteboards, go around the classroom and outside area. We are going to find things that we think would be heavier or lighter than an apple. You have 10 minutes and then we will come back to the classroom and see if you are correct. Lighter than an apple Heavier than an apple

36 LO: to estimate and measure weight using
standard units. Plenary Play game to find which object weighs more.

37 Maths Week 6 Term 3 Lesson 3

38 Starter LO: to estimate weight of different parcels.

39 LO: to estimate and measure weight using standard units.
Let’s weigh some objects. Which one do you think will we the heaviest? Which one will be the lightest? How do you know? We use grams and kilograms when we are measuring weight. There are 1000grams in 1 kilogram. We can write grams as g and kilograms as kg for short.

40 LO: to estimate and measure weight using standard units.
What a kilogram and a gram is- video m_1c_v095/index.html

41 LO: to estimate and measure weight using standard units.
We can find many different ways to measure weight at home such as kitchen scales. scales measuring kgs and grams.

42 LO: to estimate and measure weight using standard units.
Draw a table in your books and estimate if these things are more than or less than 1kg. More than 1kg Less than 1 kg

43 Maths Week 6 Term 3 Lesson 4

44 Starter LO: to find the weight of different food packages Let’s look at the different food packages/ Can we see any grams or kilograms on them?

45 LO: to estimate the weight of various objects.
Let’s look in your lunch boxes. Can you find grams on your food packages?

46 LO: to estimate the weight of various objects.
Mixed groups:

47 Maths Week 6 Term 3 Lesson 5

48 Starter LO: to estimate the weight of objects.

49 LO: to use mental maths to solve problems.
Quickwrite answers. Listen to your teacher. How many grams does she have altogether. Write your answer on your whiteboard as fast as you can and hold it up for me to see when you’re ready! Let’s do an example together: 10g + 12g = ____g. Don’t forget the g (grams) at the end.

50 LO: to use mental maths to solve problems.
On your whiteboard, create a recipe using these ingredients: Flour Butter Sugar Salt Eggs

51 LO: to use mental maths to solve problems.
Guess my number

52 Recap on grams and kilograms!
Plenary Recap on grams and kilograms!

53 Maths Week 5 Term 3 Lesson 6

54 LO: to recap on fractions.
Starter LO: to recap on fractions. Fraction story (youtube), pausing in between to discuss what the fractions mean. Fractions Story
