Let’s say we have a book about the cuttlefish. Let’s consult LCSH to see where we might be able to classify our book.

Go to ClassWeb to look up QL430.3.S47

By Diverman Cuttlefish (May Subd Geog) [QL430.3.S47] UF Sepiidae Sepiophora BT Sepiida NT Sepia Go to ClassWeb to look up QL430.3.S47 The most logical place to start in the Big Red Books would be under “cuttlefish.” [click] And we find that our subject heading is, indeed, cuttlefish. [click] And we also find that LCSH gives us a recommendation as to where to classify a book on cuttlefish. [click] So we write down our recommended classification number and head to ClassWeb to look up that number. [click]

QL430.3 .S47 And here we are. Here is the beginning of our call number. We have only one cutter at this point. So we cutter main entry. Our main entry is Diverman. So our cutter is .D5 Now we add our publication year. In this exercise, we’re going to do one more thing. We’re going to write down the hierarchy. Then each pair of students is going to come up in front of the class and show us how they found their classification and created their call number, as well as the hierarchy of the classification number they found. .D5 2007 Zoology--Invertebrates--Mollusca--Systematic divisions--Cephalopoda--By family, A-Z--Sepiidae
