Presentation on theme: "Lenses, Prisms, & Polarization"— Presentation transcript:

1 Lenses, Prisms, & Polarization

2 What is a lens? A transparent object that refracts light ray
Converge or diverge to create an image Ex: camera, microscope, eyeglasses, eyes

3 Lenses & Refraction Light traveling through a lens refracts at slightly different angles Converging lenses Bends light inward Diverging lenses Bends light outward

4 Lenses & Magnification
Type of converging lens Magnification – the change in the size of an image Usually a larger, virtual image

5 Prisms & Dispersion Prism – transparent block that separates white light into colors Waves of color travel at different speeds Violet = slow, refracts more Red = fast, refracts less Dispersion – the separation of light into different colors due to wave speed

6 Polarization Polar filters can be used to block out a direction of transverse waves Helps with reflection of light (glares)
