The A/E/C Work Structure The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Roger Fujan - FRog Work Structure Committee Technical lead USACE - Omaha District CHANGE MACC Conference Kansas City August 2017
2
In The Beginning… Reasons for the Work Structure
Simplify the old TS Workspace Provide A/E/C Standard Content NOT just for Bentley BIM AEs and Contractors asked for help 09Q4, TS_WS were very complex. Multiple variables, complete take over of config. PW extremely difficult to setup. Content was vague. Based on Bentley delivered BIM content.
3
In The Beginning… Items that had to be in place to get it done:
A/E/C CAD Standards v6.0 A/E/C Graphic Standards v2.0 A project folder structure A list of software that it would work with People willing to work on it
4
In The Beginning… 2014
5
In The Beginning…
6
In The Beginning… You CAN NOT automate “VARIES”!
7
In The Beginning… The A/E/C Work Structure was initially released on 8/21/2015 09Q4, TS_WS were very complex. Multiple variables, complete take over of config. PW extremely difficult to setup. Content was vague. Based on Bentley delivered BIM content.

Then there was two… Then there was three…
Quick bug fix Then there was three… Better DWG support Corrected things that didn’t work More bug fixes with cells
9
Last year… Update 4 Update 4B More bug fixes More improvements Woops…
DWG work mode Annotation scale of hatch patterns Update 4B Woops… 4 6/3/2016 MS_RFDIR –debug back on, more metric mode, DWG mode: annotation tool, SSM, Rename of templates to describe units (Architectural, Decimal) 4B 6/10/2016 Printing problems with dscript
10
Last year… Update 5 AECOsim Building Designer PowerInRoads
Updated rules for (SS6) PowerInRoads Update XIN, FXL, and ITL files Small changes to cells AutoCAD Metric line types Templates based on units ABD: went through all of the rules and reset them to the AEC Standards
11
And Now… Update 6 Metric dataset improvements ProjectWise improvements
InRoads Survey Phase 1: Consensus from Surveyors on ALPHA codes Match that with the XIN Printing improvements Building Designer Phase 2 after the next Survey Class in Omaha
12
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_001 Bentley V8i based Bentley CONNECT based
No new development Don’t expect much, other than bug fixes Bentley CONNECT based Not likely due to the vast differences
13
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_001 AutoCAD based Revit
Depends on what might be needed Don’t expect much, other than bug fixes Revit Don’t expect anything
14
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_002 - Starting over: Common Items:
Simplify the folder structure User base and software are changing Reorganization around OmniClass Table 23 structure Even that doesn’t work well It will have to be highly modified Object Driven Move away from discipline base Using Templates Revit Taxonomy
15
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_002 - Starting over: Common Items (cont.):
Changes are happening We have to keep up And do it quickly How do we deal with legacy items? Change from a historical ways of thinking Update legacy files Timeline BETA – FY18 Q2 Pick a way, try it, and adjust as needed.
16
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_002 Bentley Items: Bentley CONNECT Workspace
Whole new configuration Whole new delivery method Complete rewrite of custom programs Old MVBAs no longer work with CONNECT Migrate from MVBA to Addins
17
What’s Next?… AEC_WS_002 Autodesk Items: AutoCAD and Civil3D
Deliver and develop content with the Work Structure Revit integration People are asking for it, why aren’t we doing it? Include Revit Templates with changes to the WS? ??? Same Level = how much
