This is the story of a teacher who shared 1 photo online...
Think about how you would feel in this situation as you hear the story

3. THE FACEBOOK EXPERIMENT!

Everything you read and see on this post is true! The images in the PPT were screen shots of the actual FB page while it was active. None of them have been doctored and were all open to public viewing. Privacy is taken very seriously so all posts and photos from others have been covered up

On Friday 7th February 2014, a teacher named Melanie made up a fake Facebook account holding an information poster Her account was left with the privacy settings set to public (this is FB’s default) The picture was shared with one friend only at 8:08pm The link the to the friend was deleted to protect her privacy

5. This was the post

6. So what happened next?.......... She lost control of her picture!
She no longer controlled what people did to it!
Some were nice – some were not!!!
But she could do NOTHING about it!

9. And.............. She lost control of where it went
It was posted onto Twitter without her permission

10. And.............. She lost control of people investigating her page
Unknown people started liking her date of birth

11. And.............. She lost control of what was being said!
Arguments broke out on her page!

12. And.............. Who are they? What do they want from me?
5 Requests in a limited amount of time to be her friend!!!
Who are they?
What do they want from me?
How do I know they are real?
Where are they from?
Who else knows them in real life?
What will they gain from being my friend?
What will I gain?

13. And.............. So they would know: Who she likes!
Unknown people wanted to follow her on her page!
So they would know:
Who she likes!
What her family is like!
What she does!
How she is feeling!
Where she is going!

14. She lost control of where it went it the world

Please note this depicts only one person who has commented – there were many from all over the world from the same country but logistically I could not plot them all!

The photograph was seen in approximately 55 countries. BUT these are only the ones that stated their location! What about the others who saw the post but didn’t comment?????

Nearly every single city and town in the UK was mentioned

On Sunday morning while she was out in her local area – She was asked by a young lady if she was the person that had her photo on FB!!!

She lost control of who commented

21. AND...... She lost control of what people thought of her!
She got verbally abused for what she looked like in the picture

22. So....... She felt... Worried Scared Upset Threatened Unsafe
Vulnerable

23. So............. She took BACK CONTROL! She DELETED the photograph
She changed all her settings to friends only
She reviewed her FB page to see what ‘others’ would see
She didn’t post anything that would upset or hurt anyone else

24. BUT................ It will NEVER be gone! It will NEVER be deleted!
This photograph is still out there in the world on other’s computers!
It will NEVER be gone!
It will NEVER be deleted!
She can NEVER forget it!

25. Remember... Things to Consider........
Think before you post photos online
Once it is out there you can never ever go back
How safe are you? Is your profile secure so only people you trust can see your photos?

Think when you are commenting or sharing on other’s posts!
Would you say this to their face?
Would you want it said to you?
How might it make them feel?
