Reactions of Acids and Bases
2
When an acid and a base are mixed together we say it is a chemical reaction – We call this NEUTRALISATION. There are a few different reactions that we need to know (you will get to do some in the lab and this will make more sense).
3
An acid + base = salt + water For example: Sodium Chloride is a salt
The general rules are: An acid + base = salt + water For example: Sodium Chloride is a salt Hydrochloric Acid + Sodium Hydroxide = Sodium Chloride + Water ACID BASE SALT
4
Magnesium Sulphate is also a salt
And Copper Sulphate And Potassium Nitrate Some interesting ones to know are that a sting from a bee is as painful as it is FORMIC acid. If you put a common base on the sting like soap or Bicarbonate of Soda it will be neutralised and take away the pain. A wasp sting is basic, so if you put vinegar on it (an acid) it too will be neutralised.
5
Other areas in the home where it is important to know about acids and bases are in the care of swimming pools… Chlorine reacts with the water in a pool to form an acid which kills the bacteria to make it safe for us to swim… we add other chemicals sometimes to ensure that we keep the pH levels around 7 though so it really safe to swim. What would happen if it was either too basic or acidic
6
Acid + metal = Hydrogen gas + salt
NEXT Rule: Acid + metal = Hydrogen gas + salt For example: Hydrochloric acid + Magnesium = Hydrogen + Magnesium Chloride 2HCl Mg = H mgCl Acid + carbonate rule: Acid + carbonate = carbon dioxide gas + salt + water Hydrochloric acid + sodium bicarbonate = sodium chloride + water + carbon dioxide HCl NaHCO3 -> NaCl H CO2
