1
Living Space To identify and explore poetic techniques within a poem.
To analyse the language and structure of a text to identify its meaning.
2
Consider the title... What might it tell you about the poem?
What images does it bring to mind? Who do you imagine the poem to be written by? Where might it be set?
3
What are these images of?
What words do you associate with them? Make a list!
4
What words do you associate with these images?
Compare these images to those from the previous slide. What is similar, what is different?
5
Living Space There are just not enough Straight lines. That Is the problem. Nothing is flat Or parallel. Beams Balance crookedly on supports Thrust off the vertical. Nails clutch at open seams. The whole structure leans dangerously Towards the miraculous. Into this rough frame, Someone has squeezed A living space And even dared to place These eggs in a wire basket, Fragile curves of white Hung out over the dark edge Of a slanted universe, Gathering the light Into themselves, As if they were The bright, thin walls of faith.

A note on the poet: Imtiaz Dhraker is a poet, artist and documentary film-maker. She was born in Pakistan, raised in Glasgow, and now lives between London and Mumbai. She is well respected in the artistic world for her honesty and creative approach in regards to culture, displacement and our understanding the two. Does knowing her background affect your understanding of the poem? Why did I withhold this information?
7
ARTWARS Write an ARTWARS analysis.
Remember that we have changed the second A to all other poetic techniques. When you get to W and S really think about what her words might mean and why the poem is structured the way it is. You have 10 minutes!

Reflection: on the road to understanding
