Unit 13 Plumbing Prints
3
Objectives Identify various piping systems.
Recognize plumbing fixture symbols on prints. Explain the three stages of plumbing installation. Read a piping diagram. (Charles E. Smith, Areté 3 Ltd.)
4
Stages of Plumbing Installation
Done prior to pouring foundation Provisions for service entrance made Provisions for sewer drain made Stage 2 Completed prior to slab-on-grade construction and wall coverings Rough-in plumbing Installation of water supply and sewage drain pipes Stage 3 Done after walls and floors are finished Finish plumbing Installation of fixtures
5
Stage 1 (Goodheart-Willcox Publisher)
6
Stage 2 (Goodheart-Willcox Publisher)
7
Water Distribution System
Main supply line from municipal meter or other supply source All pipes that distribute water to service outlets: Water heater Sinks Water closets Hose bibbs Control valves
8
Water Distribution System
(Herndon Engineering Services, Inc.; CR architecture + design)
9
Water Distribution Piping Materials
Copper piping Galvanized steel pipe Plastic pipe Copper and plastic are most common for residential installations
10
Tankless Water Heaters
Green Building Tankless Water Heaters Produce instant hot water Last longer and require less energy Water is heated only as needed More than one needed in large homes
11
Copper Piping Available in: Should not be embedded in concrete
Heavy, medium, and light wall thickness Hard or soft tempers Should not be embedded in concrete Should never come in contact with other metals Pipe joints are either sweated or threaded
12
Galvanized Steel Pipe Has great strength and dimensional stability
Coating protects against rusting Three grades available: S—Standard weight XS—Extra strong XXS—Double extra strong Standard weight used for most residential and light commercial distribution systems
13
Plastic Pipe Used extensively in plumbing installations
Typically rated according to wall thickness and ability to carry hot water Joints may be threaded, solvent welded, or connected using special fittings
14
Types of Plastic Pipe Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Used for cold water supply piping and sewage piping Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) Used for cold and hot water supply piping Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) Flexible, lightweight tubing Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) Used for sewage piping
15
Sleeves Used when copper pipe passes through concrete slab or masonry wall Copper run through plastic sleeve or larger pipe Larger pipe allows movement due to expansion and contraction
16
Isometric Plumbing Drawing
(Charles E. Smith, Areté 3 Ltd.)
17
Plumbing Symbols (Goodheart-Willcox Publisher)
18
Sewage Disposal System
Also known as DWV (drain/waste/vent) system Includes: Vertical soil stack Vent Trap for each fixture Cleanouts at the base of each waste stack
19
Plumbing Codes Uniform Plumbing Code International Plumbing Code
Code provisions include: Kinds and sizes of pipe to be used Locations of traps and cleanouts Fixture requirements Venting provisions Connections to supply and sewer lines Leak testing conducted on supply and waste lines
20
Careers in Construction
Mechanical Trades Many opportunities for employment Plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians Requires specialized training 3–5 years on-the-job and classroom training Requires knowledge of reading prints and building codes
