3 Lesson Objectives To understand the purpose of World Toilet Day. To look at particular communities that do not possess clean toilets and discuss the effects on them. To attempt to think of some solutions to the problems that are linked with World Toilet Day.

4 What is World Toilet Day?
World Toilet Day has been established to raise awareness of the lack of sanitary toilets in some developing countries.

5 37% without access to a clean toilet 63% with access to a clean toilet
2.5 BILLION people around the world do not have access to a clean toilet. That’s 37% of the global population or 1 person out of every 3! If the Earth had a population of 10 people, nearly 4 of those people would not have access to a clean toilet. 37% without access to a clean toilet 63% with access to a clean toilet

Worldwide more people have access to a mobile phone than have access to a safe toilet. How does this fact make you feel? Discuss in pairs.

10 In groups of 3, think about how to solve the following problems:
How to solve it 1 out of 3 people on the planet are without access to a clean toilet. The governments of LEDCs could invest in building clean toilets. People in LEDCs using rivers as toilets. Schools within LEDCs should emphasise the importance of sanitation. Women in LEDCs are afraid to go to the toilet at night out of fear of being attacked. Pupils in MEDCs destroying school toilets. LEDCs not being able to afford building clean toilets. People in MEDCs laughing when somebody attempts to discuss the serious matter of World Toilet Day and the problems involved.
