4 The Book of Job Our Goal We try to understand as much as possible, not only why we live in a world of evil, but more important, how we are to live in such a world.

6 “Does Job Fear God for Naught?”
The Book of Job Lesson 3, October 15 “Does Job Fear God for Naught?” “Natatakot Ba si Job sa Diyos Nang Walang Kapalit?”

7 “Does Job Fear God for Naught?”
Key Text Job 2:10 NKJV “But he said to her, ‘You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?’ ” Susing Talata. ”(Job 2:10).

8 The book of Job also shows that
“Does Job Fear God for Naught?” Initial Words The book of Job also shows that this great controversy is not merely someone else’s fight, in that we have nothing to do with it. If only that were the case; unfortunately, it’s not. Satan has come down to the earth and we know for ourselves that his wrath is indeed great. Who among us, as flesh, hasn’t felt that wrath? Panimulang Salita.

9 1. God, Himself is Attacked (Job 1:9-11)
“Does Job Fear God for Naught?” Quick Look 1. God, Himself is Attacked (Job 1:9-11) 2. Job is Bodily Attacked (Job 2:4-6) 3. Job’s Wife Too is Attacked (Job 2:9, 10a) 1. Ang Diyos, Mismo ay Inatake (Job 1:9-11) 2. Si Job ay Inatake sa Katawan (Job 2:4-6) 3. Ang Asawa ni Job ay Inatake Rin (Job 2:9, 10a)

10 “ ‘Does Job fear God for nothing?
“Does Job Fear God for Naught?” 1. God, Himself is Attacked Job 1:9-11 NKJV “ ‘Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now...touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You in Your face.’ ” 1.

11 1. God, Himself is Attacked
As Job is Accused The book of Job opens by referencing not only Job’s righteousness and good character but also his material blessings and fruitful household. These are the specific things that Satan hurls in God’s face, saying basically, “Only because You have done this for him does he serve You.”

12 You to Your face’ ” (Job 1:11, NKJV)?
1. God, Himself is Attacked As Job is Accused What is implied in Satan’s charge that if God were to take these things away from Job, Job would “ ‘surely curse You to Your face’ ” (Job 1:11, NKJV)? The attack, really, is an attack against God Himself. If God were so wonderful, so good, then Job would obey and fear and worship Him out of love and appreciation alone.

13 After all, who wouldn’t love a God who had done so much for him?
1. God, Himself is Attacked As Job is Accused After all, who wouldn’t love a God who had done so much for him? In a sense, Satan was saying that God had all but bribed Job into being faithful to Him. Thus, he claimed, Job served God not out of love for God but out of his own selfish motives.

14 “Does Job Fear God for Naught?”
2. Job is Bodily Attacked Job 2:4-6 NKJV “ ‘Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. But stretch out Your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse You to Your face!’ And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.’ ” 2.

15 Ruin Job’s body, his health,
2. Job is Bodily Attacked Skin for Skin The phrase “skin for skin” is an idiomatic expression that has baffled commentators. The idea, though, is this: let something happen to Job’s own person, and that will cause him to show where his loyalty really is. Ruin Job’s body, his health, and see what happens.

16 2. Job is Bodily Attacked Patriarchs and Prophets 68, 69 “But the plan of redemption had a yet broader and deeper purpose than the salvation of man. It was...to vindicate the character of God before the universe.... The act of Christ in dying for the salvation of man would...justify God and His Son in their dealing with the rebellion of Satan. It would establish the perpetuity of the law of God and...reveal the nature...of sin.” Patriarchs and Prophets 68, 69.

17 2. Job is Bodily Attacked Job’s First Response “Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshipped. And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.’ In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong” (Job 1:20-22).

18 “ ‘Shall we indeed accept good
2. Job is Bodily Attacked Job’s Second Response “ ‘Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?’ In all this Job did not sin with his lips” (Job 2:10b). In both cases, despite the attacks, Job stayed faithful to the Lord. Both texts stress the fact that Job did not sin, either with actions or with words.

19 2. Job is Bodily Attacked Obedience Unto Death The texts don’t say that Job wasn’t a sinner. The Bible teaches that we are all sinners. “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar. And His word is not in us” (1 John 1:10, NKJV). Being “blameless and upright,” fearing God and shunning evil (Job 1:1, NKJV), does not make a person sinless. Job was born in sin and needed a Savior. Pagsunod Hanggang Kamatayan.

20 But he said to her, ‘You speak as one of the foolish women speaks.’ ”
“Does Job Fear God for Naught?” 3. Job’s Wife Too is Attacked Job 2:9, 10a NKJV “Then his wife said to him, ‘Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!’ But he said to her, ‘You speak as one of the foolish women speaks.’ ” 3.

21 Job’s wife appears only in Job 2:9,
3. Job’s Wife Too is Attacked Another Victim Job’s wife appears only in Job 2:9, 10. After that, she vanishes from the story and from history. However, considering all that happened, who could imagine the grief that this unfortunate woman went through? Her tragedy, that of her children, and that of the other victims in chapter 1 show the universality of suffering. Isa Pang Biktima.

22 How unfortunate that Job’s wife becomes someone who challenges
3. Job’s Wife Too is Attacked Another Victim How unfortunate that Job’s wife becomes someone who challenges Job on the very thing for which God commends him. In her grief, in her sorrow, she’s pushing Job to do precisely what God says he won’t do. What a lesson to us all about how careful we have to be in order not to be a stumbling block to others.

23 fall into sin, and thus refuted Satan’s charges against God.
“Does Job Fear God for Naught?” Final Words Job could be seen as a faint example of Jesus, who, amid terrible trials and temptations, didn’t give up, didn’t fall into sin, and thus refuted Satan’s charges against God. His [Jesus] real test would come at the cross, and here, too, despite everything thrown at Him, Jesus stayed faithful, even unto death. Huling Pananalita.
