Subtracting Integers: integer tiles, number line, & rules
2
Subtracting Integers Using Counters
If subtracting a negative from a negative or a positive from a positive: Put down enough counters to represent 1st number remove the required number of tiles indicated by 2nd number Example: (-5) – (-2) = -3 Example: (+5) – (+2) = +3
3
Subtracting Integers Using Counters
If subtracting a negative from a positive or a positive from a negative: Put down enough counters to represent 1st number Add enough zero pairs to have enough to be able to take away the 2nd number Example: (-5) – (+2) = -7
4
Subtracting Integers Using a Number Line
Start at the 2nd number draw an arrow towards the 1st number: Distance between the 2 #s = answer Direction of arrow = sign Examples: (-15) – (-20) = +5 (-20) – (+15) = -35
5
Subtracting Integers by Adding the Opposite
Change question by turning subtraction question into addition question Leave 1st number the same Change – between numbers to + Change sign of 2nd # to opposite of what it is Follow adding integer rules 1st # opposite of 2nd # Example: (+3) – (-2) becomes: (+3) + (+2) = +5 (-7) – (+3) becomes: (-7) + (-3) = -10
