4 Opening Thought What does harvest mean? What are the basic steps of harvesting? How does it apply to finding information for your research paper?

5 Answer: Harvesting is the removal of crops from the field. The three basics steps of harvesting is removing of the seed/kernel extra from plant, separating the “wheat from the chaff” and then packaging and shipping it. Your research paper is the same. You are removing the information from the sources, you are evaluating what you want to keep and what you want to throw away, and then you are taking the information and integrating it into your paper.

Everyone should create a Google Doc. * If you don’t have a google account…make one.

13 You’ve got options – General databases
MAS Ultra is a general database created for a high school audience. Explora is a general database created for middle and high school users. Scholarly, full text database for academic research. SMALL MEDIUM LARGE

14 You’ve got options – specialized databases
Country Reports provides over 35,000 pages of online content on the cultures and countries of the world.  Unlimited access to top rated reference ebooks.

15 You’ve got options – specialized databases
Global Issues in Context focuses on broad issues, such as war, genocide, terrorism, human rights, poverty, famine, globalization, world trade, nuclear proliferation, and global warming. Explore both sides of an issue. Gale's Opposing Viewpoints In Context is the premier online resource covering today's hottest social issues, from capital punishment to immigration to marijuana.

16 Link databases to Microsoft office 365 or google
Saving to the cloud will allow you to access your research from any computer.

17 Be persistent- refine search if needed
Databases will not sort your results the same way Google does. You will get results for every article that has your keywords. Don’t give up after the first 5 articles. The best one could be the last one! If you have too many results, try to narrow your search terms. If you have too few results, try to broaden your search terms.

18 Databases will create your citations
Find an article and choose “cite” or “citation tools”. Make sure to select MLA format. Now copy and paste onto your works cited page.

19 Database home use Access databases from home the same way you do at school. You will need passwords for home use. You can take a picture of the passwords now or get a password bookmark from your teacher or the library.

21 Step 7: Begin Researching
This time is not to evaluate your information. This time is to just skim and gather. The more information you have the better because then you have more to work with. Use your google slides to collect pictures, and use your google docs to collect URLs/WC citations. Remember start with the Databases first because they have the citations already done for you. If you can’t find anything on the databases then go out on to the web; however, remember to grab all the information. Make sure that you write a small blurb next to your URL/MLA citation so that you can go back and know what it was about.

22 Reminder A works cited page will be due on Monday 27th when we get back from the break. We will have the laptops in class; therefore, we will upload to turnitin.com during class. Make sure that you have something to put on your works cited page.
