What is the SCLC? The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was a U. S. civil rights organization founded (1957) by Ella Baker in Atlanta, Georgia. It was under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. SCLC reflected his philosophy of asserted nonviolence and was intended to broaden the civil rights effort through peaceful but effective demonstrations. It is a nation wide organization, now, made up of chapters and affiliates with programs that affect the lives of all Americans: North, South, East, and West. Also, when I say all Americans, I mean regardless of race, religion, or background.
