1 Far Detector Activities Late 2017 – Early 2018
C. Montanari CERN – FNAL – INFN

2 Materials procurement and delivery
Materials production of the cold shield. Three suppliers are presently charged for the production of the cold shield components: large aluminum extruded panels in Turkey, small extruded aluminum panels (clamps) in Israel, piping in Spain. Large extrusions: prototypes produced and validated after agreement on a modification about the realization of the groove that hosts the pipes. Extrusion will take one day and is scheduled in about two weeks from now (early December) machining takes 3 weeks in total. Production is expected to be completed around the end of It will be delivered directly to Fermilab, arrival is expected between end of January and beginning of February 2018. Small extrusions: extrusion is complete and machining is in progress. Completion of production is expected around half of December It will be delivered directly to Fermilab, arrival is expected before the end of January Piping system: The first two panels will be ready for inspection at the beginning of December. The production is expected to be completed around mid January, The panels available before Christmas (first two batches, 10 panels) will be sent to Fermilab from the manufacturer and are expected to arrive around the end of January The rest of the panels (12 panels) will arrive before end of February Materials delivery from CERN Director's Progress Review of SBN - November 1, 2017

3 Materials procurement and delivery
Materials delivery from CERN A container (large size, 12 m length) is being readied at CERN for the transport to Fermilab of: Part of the Top warm vessel; Chimneys and crosses; Vacuum pumps; Cold vessels feet and supports; Special nuts and resin for the sealing of the doors; Nuts and bolts for the assembly of the cold shields; Cryogenic piping to be installed inside the cold vessels; Nuts, bolts and O-rings for the installation of the chimneys and crosses. The container will be sent from CERN at the beginning of December and it will arrive at Fermilab around mid January 2018. Director's Progress Review of SBN - November 1, 2017

4 Activities Supports preparation on the warm vessel
Activities on the cold vessels The cold vessels have to be covered (with a tent) for protection from bad weather and to allow heating for the various operations and for the curing of the resin used to seal the door bolts. Installation of a tent or similar should be done before Christmas. Doors welding. To be done starting from January; requires about 1 week / door (Fermilab) Bolts sealing. To be done starting from January; requires about 1 day / door to install the special nuts and 3 days for curing of the sealing resin (assuming a stable temperature around 5 °C to 10 °C) (INFN and Fermilab) Vacuum tightness test. To be done as soon as the doors of one vessel are sealed. Requires one day for installation of the pumps and 3 days for pumping down and leak check. It has to be preceded by the installation of strain gauges on the vessel walls to control the behavior of the vessels during the vacuum loading. The gauges will remain attached to the vessels and will also be used during the commissioning phases (INFN and Fermilab). Installation of the cold feet. Machining of the cold parts: 1 week at the end of January, after arrival of the pieces (Fermilab). Installation: 1 day/vessel at the beginning of February (INFN and CERN). Supports preparation on the warm vessel Drilling of the threaded holes to anchor the Copper-Beryllium sliding guides. To be done in December (Fermilab). Installation of the sliding and guiding supports (tag welding of the St. Steel stoppers). To be done during the second half of January, after the arrival of the container with the support components (Fermilab). Director's Progress Review of SBN - November 1, 2017

5 Activities Assembly and installation of the cold shield
Pre-assembly of the cold shield panels: to be done in the Nova building starting at the beginning of February 2018; requires 2 mechanical technicians (1 CERN and 1 INFN), 1 welder (Fermilab) and a crane driver (Fermilab). Requires 2 days / 3 panels for pre-assembly and installation of the bottom and long vertical walls and 2 days for pre-assembly and installation of the front and back (short) vertical walls (3 working weeks in total, with some contingency). 3 days are required for the final pressure test.
