Timing The cheetah moves across the screen much faster than the turtle. This enforces the relative speeds of each of the animals, and it appeals to the viewer because it makes logical sense.

Follow Through After the fist punches the stick figure, it still continues moving forward. It would look strange if the fist immediately stopped moving, but having it continue to move makes it seem more realistic.

Exaggeration In the picture, it is clear that the man is angry. However, it is impossible to have steam come out of one’s ears, but the steam exaggerates the anger that he is clearly feeling.

Slow In and Slow Out The swimmer begins slowly, swims at a fast pace, and then slows down at the other side of the screen. This principle makes it more realistic that the swimmer is moving in a natural way, instead of swimming at the exact same speed the entire time.

Staging The clouds in the background help to enhance the effect of the plane’s movement. It makes it seem that the plane is actually flying through the sky.
