2 BREAKDOWN What does culture mean in this context?
Culture in this context is very broad, it varies from TV and pop music to high culture to ballets and poetry What does materialism mean in this context? - Materialism in this context is talking about the stature of society and how there is a class system that is to be followed

3 INTRODUCTION Cultural Materialism originated from the work of the left wing critic, Raymond Williams and is based on critical theory (the ideology that critiques society and culture through examination) in the 1980’s Raymond Williams work laid the foundation for the field of cultural studies and cultural materialist way of thinking

4 CHARATERISTIC OF CULTURAL MATERIALISM:
1. Historical Context (uses the historical context to understand the society at the time of the text) 2. Political Commitment (looks at the text to critique its political views) 3. Theoretical Method (looks at the text critiquing society and culture through examination) 4. Textual Analysis (wishes to apply and use theory to read texts)

5 RELATED TOPICS New Historicism:
- Both New Historicism and Cultural Materialism examine the social hierarchy - unlike new historicism that looks at the top of the social hierarchy (i.e. the Church, the monarchy, the upper class), Cultural Materialism examines the bottom hierarchy (i.e. lower-class and women); in other words, the outsider

6 MEaN GIRLS 1. Historical Content:
-in modern culture, high school contain class systems of popularity - from the beginning you know who the outsider is because of the historical content - the political commitment is very similar to the historical content

7 2. Theoretical Method: - because she was homeschooled and new to the school she is the outsider - the outsider breaks the ``popularity`` class system and becomes on of them
