2. Review – Results of the French and Indian War
England sends troops to protect the colonists. Fights a costly war on their behalf.
England gains a huge amount of territory in their victory (up to the Mississippi River)
England is in a huge debt.
Salutary neglect- A hands-off policy of England towards the American colonies is over. England takes an active role in colonial affairs.

Proclamation Line of 1763
Details: to reduce violence between Native Americans and colonists, Parliament passes a law making it illegal to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains
This is the first time England has restricted the colonies
After years of salutary neglect, the colonists were feeling independent and used to running their own affairs
IMPACT: The colonists were upset that they were restricted by the British from moving into the new land.

We came and defended you, so you should help pay for the cost.
We need places to put the soldiers we sent to defend you.
Taxes are an easy way to raise revenue.
You belong to us, so really, you should do what we say.
Quit whining!

7. The Sugar Act- 1764 Details:
Put a tax on sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and certain kinds of wine.
Mostly hurt the New England region.
Taxes were done without colonial approval.
Impact:
Colonists are angered.
NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!

9. The Stamp Act-1765 Details:
Every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public and legal document had to have a Stamp, or British seal, on it.
The Stamp, of course, cost $$$$ .

10. Stamp Act 1765
Impact:
The Colonists are frustrated, acted out by boycotting.
Colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress, to show England their displeasure.
Seeing the hostile reaction in the colonies, the British government repealed the Stamp Act.

11. Declaratory Act- 1765 Details:
After the repeal of the Stamp act, England passed the Declaratory Act.
Declaratory Act stated that Great Britain was still the boss of the American colonies "in all cases whatsoever.“
Impact:
Colonist felt it was a joke. They lost respect for England.

12. The Quartering Act- 1765 Details:
Required colonists to house and feed British troops for free when requested.
Impact:
Colonists were outraged that England would not pay to house its own soldiers.
England felt that the colonists asked for protection and should therefore pay to keep the British soldiers housed.
The Quartering Act was inspiration for the 3rd Amendment to the Bill of Rights.

13. The Townshend Act 1767 Details:
King passes this act as a response to the Stamp Act Congress.
Placed indirect (hidden) taxes on imported goods such as glass, paper, paint, lead and tea.
Impact:
Colonists reaction: smuggling (sneaking in illegally) goods into the colonies. Not buying the taxed goods (boycott).
England counteraction: passes the Writs of Assistance (search warrants) which allowed soldiers to enter homes/businesses looked for smuggled goods.
