Single camera production
Single camera production uses only one camera for all the shots. Single camera productions are usually used for non live T.V programmes such as ‘Sherlock’. This allows the director to have more control over the shots and there is more time for editing. Single camera productions are mostly used for T.V shows, music videos, and other low budget short films. The benefits to using a single camera is that it is cheaper than using multiple cameras as you will not need to purchase as many cameras or employ as many camera men. You can also move the camera around more freely as you will not have to worry about getting another camera in the shot. There is also more freedom with the shots seeing as you have the option to move them around and manipulate shots. Single camera productions are very time consuming for everyone involved. They will not be able to act fluidly, there will be a lot of repetition of actors repeating their lines to ensure the camera gets the perfect shot. Some shots would be easier to create if there were multiple cameras being used, such as a conversation between a group of people. Some examples of single camera shot productions are: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-present) Friday Night Dinners (2011-present) Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23 ( )

Multi camera techniques
Multi camera techniques uses multiple cameras to film a series. Most multi camera techniques are used for live television or live episodes such as ‘The Chase’, live episodes of ‘Eastenders’, and ‘the X-Factor’. Using multiple camera has its advantages, it is a quicker process that using a single camera as more shots are achieved in less time. There will also be more footage to film from as the same scene will be being filmed from multiple angles. It also means that you will not have to relocate as there will usually be a set with all the camera already in. For example with The Chase, there will be certain shots that are expected to be seen and the cameras will stay there. However, using multiple camera has its disadvantages. It is quite expensive to have all these camera running at once and to employ the amount of people it takes to man the cameras. There is also less control for the director with their shots as they have to make sure all of the other cameras are out of shot so the cameras can not be moved around. Some examples of multi camera techniques are: The X-Factor (2004-present) BBC News (1922-present) Paul O’Grady ( )

Series, serial and single drama
A series is a show like Friends. There will be breaks in between seasons has a clear end to it. Series unlike serials are more like short movies, some the episodes will carry on from the previous but for the most part most episodes have a different storyline from the episode prior. Serial A serial is a continual show, there is an episode that is shown every day without fail. Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale are all serial dramas. Each episode will relate to the episode prior, for example: if there was an episode where someone died the next episode may be their funeral or people coming to terms with their death. If this was in a series however, there may not be a whole episode dedicated to that unless a main character was involved. Single Drama A single drama is a one off episode which will not have any follow up episodes. These shows are usually factual and will focus on one topic. An example of a single drama would be ‘Dirty War’ A one off long episode about the terrorist attacks in central London

What are genres? Genre means sort or style in French. A genre is a way to put art, films, T.V shows, books, music, games etc. into groups. Genre is important so people can find what they are looking for easily. For example if you wanted to watch a film about a girl falling in love you would look in the romance section.

What is the most popular genre in film?
According to ‘The Numbers’ the most popular genre of 2016 was Action had lots of action films, they were mostly based in the Marvel or DC comic world. There were films such as ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘Deadpool’, ‘X- Men’, and the new ‘Star Wars’. All of these films were highly anticipated and most were based on a popular comic. It would only make sense for action to be the most popular genre of By taking an old film such as ‘Star Wars’ and making a new film based on an old film series will intrigue a younger audience and will make an older audience want to watch a new film in a series they grew up with, this also applies to comic books. In action there are lots of sub-genres such as Sci-Fi- action (Star Wars) and Superhero (Deadpool). This gives filmmakers a wider canvas to create their films, not limiting them to one specific genre, this also means that they can reach a larger audience. Genres are also manage to stay relevant by who they cast in their films. For example a comedy film would not star Scarlet Johansson seeing as she is an action movie star, and you would not cast Chris Rock in an action film seeing as he is a comedy actor. The marketing of these films keeps them relevant too. Suicide Squad was advertised nearly 2 years before its release. Creating posters and promotional videos and teaser trailers, this is because the age rating on the film was a 15 so their target audience was for 15+ and they were catering to the younger audience by keeping it fresh in their minds.
