S.C: To track my ancestor’s arrival to Australia and the effects of their migration.

Select one of the following stories and write the ending to it. This should be half a page long.
1. It’s dark. I’m scared. And hungry. For the past five weeks my family and I have been on the run trying to find a place where bullets are not fired toward us as we make our way to school and work.
2. My mother is an engineer. She is one of the best in the world and she has been offered a job in America. She thinks that it is an opportunity of a lifetime, but I know it means having to leave all of my friends behind…
3. My aunty, uncle and cousins moved to Berlin (Germany) last year. My parents and grandparents miss them terribly. My grandfather and father believes that a family should always be close together. Since my aunty and uncle can’t come home, we are going to move to them.
4. Our country’s economy is in crisis. The money is gone. People are rioting on the streets. My parents are scared for their jobs. For my education. For the future of us all.

3. Your ilt
For last couple of weeks we’ve been looking at migration and population density.
Your first ILT for this unit is to investigate the migration of your own family.
That is, where did they come from, why did they come here and what was the effect of the migration on Australia?

Nan = born in France, 1948
Grandma = born in Denmark, 1950
Pa = born in Switzerland, 1946
Mum = born in Switzerland, 1976
Dad = born in Melbourne, Australia, 1975
Me = born in Melbourne, Australia, 2002
In my family, my mother and her parents migrated to Australia.
My father was born in Australia, but both of his parents also migrated to Australia. All members of my family are from European descent.

Nan first migrated to Switzerland from France. Then From Switzerland to Australia.

6. Today’s session:
By the end of the session, you should aim to complete the following aspects of your ILT:
1. Use your laptop or draw on poster paper your family tree.
2. Decide who you want to focus on for migration (that is, which side of the family). Choose the person who you have the most contact with.
3. On the world map on the share-drive track your family’s migration from their original country of origin to Melbourne or Australia.
4. Come up with your own questions (a minimum of 2)

7. Homework
This assignment can only be completed outside of school as it requires you to interview a parent/guardian or grandparent.
Ask them the key questions from the sheet, as well as your own. Record their answers so that you can later create your presentation.

8. Reflection questions
Why do you believe so many migrants choose to live in Australia, as opposed to any other 1st world country?
What can be some positive or negative impacts on immigration for the migrants involved? And for the country they’re moving to?
e.g. Positive for migrant = greater education opportunity. Negative = possibly faced with racism.
Positive for nation = increased multiculturalism
Negative for nation = increase to population – infrastructure cannot keep up.
