3 What is an earthquake? Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or unexpected shock of the earth’s surface. They usually last for less than a minute. They are the Earth's natural means of releasing stress.

4 Earthquakes cannot be predicted with more than 1 million earthquakes rattle the world each year

5 Causes of earthquakes There are about 20 plates along the surface of the earth that move continuously and slowly past each other. When the plates squeeze or stretch, huge rocks form at their edges and the rocks shift with great force causing an earthquake.

The most important, direct shaking effects are not the only hazard associated with earthquakes. Other effects such as: Tsunami Landslides Liquefaction

10 Short Term Impacts Earthquakes cause massive
damage to the surrounding areas Peoples’ homes may be destroyed People can be killed or injured Transport and communication links can be disrupted Water pipes may burst and water supplies may be contaminated.

11 Long Term Impacts Diseases may spread.
People may have to be rehoused sometimes in refugee camps. The costs of rebuilding are high. Investment in the area will be focused only on repairing the damage caused by the earthquake. Incomes may be lost. Important natural and human landmarks may be lost.

13 Who can help?

14 Shelter Box Provide people in need with a Shelter Kit full of materials to mend and create shelters Demonstrated how to use the kits in a variety of ways to build back safer homes Shelter Box helped provide shelter for almost 68,000 people who were left homeless after the Nepal earthquakes.

15 Disasters Emergency Committee
One of the main features of the shelter work was teaching the skills of building temporary and permanent shelters to members of the public who were affected. Volunteers and staff members of the agencies were trained in demonstrating effective building techniques.

16 In the first six months of the response to this earthquake 13 member agencies and their partners reached more than 1.6 million people using the money raised.
