Structure of the NHS in Wales
The reorganisation of NHS Wales came into effect on October 1st 2009 and created single local health organisations responsible for delivering all healthcare services within a geographical area. There are 7 Local Health Boards (LHBs) in Wales now which plan, secure and deliver healthcare services in their areas, replacing the 22 LHBs and the 7 NHS Trusts which together performed these functions in the past.

NHS trusts in wales There are currently 3 NHS Trusts in Wales with an all - Wales focus. These are: Welsh Ambulance Services Trust for emergency services, Velindre NHS Trust offering specialist services in cancer care and a range of national support services Public Health Wales the unified Public Health organisation in Wales, with a nation wide remit.

National Delivery Group
The Chief Executive of NHS Wales, is responsible for providing the Health Minister for Wales with policy advice and for exercising strategic leadership and management of the NHS. To support this role, the Chief Executive chairs a National Delivery Group, forming part of the Department for Health and Social Services (DHSS). This group is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of NHS services across Wales.

Community Health Councils
Community Health Councils in Wales are statutory lay bodies that represent the interests of the public in the health service in their district. They give people an independent voice in their local NHS and the services it provides. The number of CHCs are being reduced to 7 covering the same areas as the new Local Heath Boards. The 7 new CHCs will be underpinned by 23 area associations with strong local links.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) is the independent inspectorate and regulator of healthcare in Wales The role of HIW is to regulate and inspect NHS services and independent healthcare providers in Wales against a range of standards, policies, guidance and regulations to highlight areas requiring improvement.

How are inspections and regulation of services done?
HIW inspects health services across Wales to check if standards are being met. Inspections take place regularly and where possible, they are unannounced. During inspections HIW asks people about their experiences of care, talk to staff, and check that the right systems and processes are in place. HIW judges whether standards are being met or not and publish reports of inspection findings on the HIW website.

Core values of HIW Patient-centred: placing patients, service users and public experience at the heart of what HIW does Openness and honesty: in the way HIW report and in all dealings with stakeholders Collaboration: building effective partnerships internally and externally Professionalism: maintaining high standards of delivery and constantly seeking to improve Proportionality: ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and proportionality in HIW approach.
