2. Timeline of Events & Dates for CNUSD
Early October- First Student Workshop for research, websites, and documentaries
Early November- Second Student Workshop for refining projects
December-projects should be finalized and ready for school site competitions
Site student winners list to Laurel Kirchhoff by: January 22, 2018 (firm deadline)
Documentaries must be uploaded WeTransfer.com by 1/22/18
Websites (NHD Weebly) will be locked and URL’s submitted no later than midnight 1/22/18
Papers must be ed in PDF form to by midnight 1/22/18
District Competition at Ramirez Intermediate: February 3, am- 3 pm
Riverside County NHD Competition: March 10th, Valley View HS, Moreno Valley

3. SO…What is National History Day
Students choose a topic within the National Theme (Conflict and Compromise) to research. They then create either an individual or group project to demonstrate their learning through a website, documentary, exhibit, performance, or historical paper.
National History Day is a “Gold Standard” Project Based Learning Model. It engages students to have a choice and voice in their learning process while gaining academic skills that help prepare students for College and Careers (C3).

4. What is History Day Cont.?
It is a Common Core State Standards-aligned program that gives students opportunity to learn historical content and develop research, thinking, and communication through the study of history. (RCOE, 2017)
History Day began in 1974, the first national competition was held in and CA’s competitions started in 1983.
It’s also an Academic Competition:
Categories of Competition:
Grades 4-5: 2-D Poster only
Junior Division (Grades 6-8)
Historical Paper (Individual entries only)
Documentary, Website, Performance, Exhibit (Individual or Groups of 2-5 students

5. This year’s theme: Conflict and Compromise
Try to connect to the theme as much as possible…depending on the topic, you might have more conflict than compromise (or vice versa).
According to NHD-don’t force it! It doesn’t have to be a balance for the theme. If there isn’t a compromise…that’s okay! Just explain why…what happened…
NHD Theme Book is available at NHD.org for both students and teacher use. It is 72 pages full of ideas, sample topics, resources, and so much more.
Doesn’t just have to be war/treaties… so much more and it’s okay to be creative!

6. Connecting the theme…
The project should fit the theme…more than a biography-looking for a deep connection to the theme.
The topic should be specific:

Indigenous ceremonial practices, religious freedom

11. Interviews…this is important…
Students don’t have to be interviewed at the site level, however…it is required at every level after(district, county, state, nationals)
Student interviews are an important part of the History Day process.
Interviews are not to be considered when judging- not scored-just a chance to clarify and provide an opportunity for interaction (Only positive interactions/not a time for critique)

12. Process Paper and Annotated Bibliography
Process paper- ALL categories (except Paper) should have a 500 word (max) process paper.
Provides a description of how students chose topic, did research, created entry
Concludes with explanation of how topic matches theme
Not a “research paper” more of a summary of their process
Annotated Bibliography
Should be separated into Primary and Secondary Sources-then, may be subdivided after that.
Should list all sources that were used, what they are, and how they were used in the project
Evaluate on strength sources, breadth of research, match to topic and theme, student’s ability to investigate with both
Primary and Secondary sources
Should relate directly to historical quality (quality or quantity)

Should be PBS worthy or The History Channel. At site, you can use WeTransfer as well.
Should be original, show stage presence, but look for content-not just great acting!
Costuming can always be improved upon, as can props and timing. Consider nerves…look for the quality.
Should be like visiting a museum (not just a display board with details thrown on)
