SMART Goals 03.04
2
Learning Target I can identify the importance of setting achievable goals and use the traits of a SMART goal to create a clear goal in one area of my life. Success Criteria: Students will identify and create a SMART Goal from one of three areas of their lives Students will identify and articulate how the steps they’ve identified are necessary for achieving their SMART goal
3
On a separate sheet of paper
PART #1: Answer the following questions: If you were given three wishes for anything, what would they be? If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it? If you found out you only had six months to live, what would you do with that time? If you could accomplish anything in the world, what would it be?
4
Debrief What made answering these questions easy?
Why is it easy to answer questions of things that likely won’t happen? (Sorry, no genies exist) What are some of the things that makes answering tough questions like “What are you going to do after high school” so difficult to answer?
5
Reading PART #2: As you read the exerpt from I Can’t Accept Not Trying, identify a “Most Valuable Phrase” that relates to goal setting and what kind of goals to set. Be prepared to share.

To realize the value of One Year,
Ask a student who failed his or her AP exams. To realize the value of One Month, Ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of One Week, Ask an editor of a weekly magazine. To realize the value of One Day, Ask a daily wage laborer who has six kids to feed. To realize the value of One Hour, Ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of One Minute, Ask a person who missed their train. To realize the value of One Second, Ask the person who survived an accident. To realize the value of One Millisecond, Ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

PART #3 Consider... What does the poem have to say about time and how we use it? To what extent do you agree or disagree with the poem? How does the poem connect to the Michael Jordan excerpt you read?

5 Ways to Kill Your Dreams (PART 4)
TED Talk: 5 Ways to Kill Your Dreams As you watch the TED Talk, record the following things: something that aligned with your thinking something that challenged your thinking something that you want to implement into your goal setting
9
Creating SMART Goals Find your Goal Buddy Sheet from last class. We’ll be using one of those goals to create a more comprehensive SMART goal. Not all goals need to be done this way. But, if it’s a major goal, it’s a good idea to have a solid plan to achieve it. You will write out your SMART goal on your piece of paper
10
Specific A goal needs to be specific. Too vague, and it’s impossible to follow. Too broad, and you’ll never be able to meet it. Which of these is a specific goal? I want to get better grades. I want to eat more healthy food. Look at your goal, is it specific?
11
Measurable A goal needs to be able to be measured in some way. Without a unit of measure, you have no way of knowing if you’ve met it. It’s the way you know you’ve met your goal? Which of these goals is measurable? I want to play video games less I want to work to get at least 8 hrs. of sleep a night Does your goal have something to measure or assess?
12
Achievable A goal that is achievable is one that you are responsible for and in control of the outcome of it. It means you are proactive about the goal, it isn’t someone else that achieve it for you. Why is the goal “I want to get the highest grade on the math test” a goal that you are not in control over? Look at your goal, is it achievable? Are you the person that the goal relies on to be achieved?
13
Relevant/Realistic A relevant and realistic goal is one that is important to you and is also something that is possible for you to achieve. Consider if the time is right to pursue this goal and if that’s possible knowing where you’re at and what you need to do. How can we turn these unrealistic goals into realistic ones?: I want to get an “A” on my biology test without studying I want to be a famous rockstar We can assume your goal is relevant, but is it realistic? Take a moment to consider anything that you hadn’t thought of that might become an obstacle.
14
Time Bound A goal that is time bound has a set start and stop point. Without this, it’s easy to put off your goal for an unspecified future date. Instead, set time limits for your goal to make managing it easier. Which goal is time bound?: I want to be a millionaire I want to learn how to play my favorite song on the guitar by my birthday Assign a deadline to your goal if you don’t have one already
15
How’d you do? (PART #5) Write your goal on your piece of paper. Have a partner check it off to make sure your goal is SMART. S- Specific M- Measurable A- Achievable R- Relevant/Realistic T- Time Bound
16
Closure Make sure your SMART goal is written on your paper. You will turn this in for credit today.
