2016 Nelson Lecture in Astronomy Probing Fundamental Physics with the Oldest Light in the Universe Dr. Tom Crawford Senior Research Associate in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago Dr. Crawford will discuss his work with the 10-meter South Pole Telescope and its observations of the cosmic microwave background, the oldest light in the Universe. Observing this background and determining its properties have led us to a much greater understanding of the nature and evolution of our universe. Dr. Crawford will discuss the next stage of CMB measurements, which aims to inform fundamental physics by probing the highest energies we will ever have access to and by measuring the properties of one of the lightest and most elusive fundamental particles. April 21, 2016, 7:30pm Hanson Hall, Room 102, Augustana College (free and open to the public) The Nelson Lecture is named in honor of Dr. Harry Nelson, 1935 graduate of Augustana College, long-time Professor of Mathematics at Augustana, and first director of the John Deere Planetarium.
