1 and the new geostationary constellation
Lançado em 19 de Novembro de 2016 CORTESIA PROF. DRA. RACHEL ALBRECHT Bom dia, vamos falar agora um pouco sobre a nova geração dos satelites geoestacionarios da NOAA, ou seja, o GOES-R

2 GLM – Geostationary Lightning Mapper
Solar Rejection Filter Solar Blocking Filter Baffle Support Baffle & Door Lens Housing & Support Structure Narrow Band Filter Metering Tube Variable Pitch CCD Focal Plane Array Assembly (FPAA) Loop Heat Pipes (FPAA) and Thermal Straps (SEB) Sensor Unit Electronics Box (SEB) 2

3 GLM – Geostationary Lightning Mapper
GLM detects lighting by comparing the radiance background at nm – O(l) every 2 ms (“500 frames/second”). CCD pixels that exceeds a background threshold are identified as a lightning event. Lightning events are grouped into groups by a space/time criteria Groups are equivalent to lightning strokes. Groups are grouped into flashes (several strokes) Group a Group b time height ... etc . etc Plan View (CCS Array)

4 Staring CCD imager (1372x1300 pixels)
Near uniform spatial resolution 8 km nadir, 14 km edge fov Coverage up to 52 deg N lat 0-90% flash detection day and night Single band nm 2 ms frame rate 7.7 Mbps downlink data rate (for comparison- TRMM LIS 8 kbps) 20 sec product latency

NWS Vision to Integrate ABI and GLM Products with Other Data and Models. A Potential Operational Example: Convective Initiation/Severe Wx How can we integrate the information in future tools? CI Over- shooting tops Lightning Jumps Next Generation Warning System Why NWS needs this? Situational Awareness Warning confidence Decision Support (venues) Situational Awareness: User comment: ‘Cloud Top Cooling product is an excellent source of enhancing the situational awareness for future convective initiation, particularly in rapid scan mode’.
