1 Introducing the HEART

2 Teachers in Residence Programme
Deirdre Halleran and Sinéad Ní Mhullaoidh Unit 5A: Keeping Healthy

3 How do WE mend a broken heart?

4 Today WE will build a medical device to fix a broken heart!

5 The heart is a muscle in the middle of your chest.
It pumps BLOOD full of OXYGEN and nutrients around the body.

6 There are small blood vessels in the body that are called arteries and veins. They connect your heart to all the areas in your body. Each time your heart beats it pumps blood through the arteries to all parts of your body.

7 Look at this video which shows how the heart works.

8 Your heart is as big as your fist.
As you grow, your heart grows also

9 The doctors say if we look after our heart, it will look after us.

10 How can YOU take care of your
heart?

11 Eat healthy foods EAT LESS EAT MORE

12 Get enough exercise

13 Problems with the heart:
When there is a lot of fat and cholesterol in the arteries, they get blocked and blood can’t go through them. This condition is called atherosclerosis. A heart attack happens when blood can’t move through a coronary artery. An angioplasty is a procedure used to treat atherosclerosis.

14 Medical Devices A medical device is a material that is used to diagnose, treat, or monitor an illness.

15 A small balloon with a stent around it is placed into the blocked coronary artery.
The balloon is inflated to open the coronary artery so that blood can flow though it faster. A stent is a small, hard tube that can be inserted to keep the coronary artery open. An angioplasty uses a little balloon to open the coronary artery that is blocked.

16 A stent can be inserted by a catheter, which is a type of medical device.
A catheter is a long, thin tube that is inserted into an artery in your leg, wrist or arm to reach your coronary artery. Catheters are made in factories and are assembled on a production line.

17 Manufacturing Engineer
Design Engineer Develops the medical device to make sure it functions. Manufacturing Engineer Makes sure the manufacturing line is working in the best way to make the medical device. Quality Engineer Makes sure the medical device meets acceptable standards. Line Supervisor Manages staff on the production line to make the medical device.

18 Now you will create your own production line
Get into groups of four Everyone is assigned a job on the line: Design Engineer Manufacturing Engineer Quality Engineer Line Supervisor Everyone is assigned a part of the device to assemble (two catheter parts, balloon and stent). Use the design and materials to build the medical device as a team. Fill out the evaluation form.
