1 Ellen Hopkins’ CRANK

2 CRANK Crank is a novel written by Ellen Hopkins in 2004.
The book has been banned in many locations due to complaints of the book's drug use, language, and sexual themes.

3 CRANK- style and format
The novel Crank is written in a form of free verse. What is free verse?

4 CRANK- style and format
FREE VERSE: Free verse is an open form of poetry. It does not use consistent meter, patterns, rhyme or any other musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.

5 CRANK- style and format
Every page is a different poem, describing the life of Kristina and detailing her addiction.

6 CRANK- style and format
Ellen Hopkins’ poems come alive with the use of IMAGERY and many LITERARY DEVICES. For example,You will see: Simile: Metaphor: Personification:

7 CRANK- style and format
Simile: A comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as”. Metaphor: A comparison of two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as”. Personification: Giving human qualities to non-human things.

8 CRANK- style and format
At times, these poems will display a noticeable visual guide shaped by the text of the page that trigger emotions and provide powerful messages.

9 CRANK- style and format
For example, in the poem named "Changed“ (page 207), Kristina is facing troubles with her addiction and is trying to get healthy again. How is the text written? What is the impact of this? What is the most visible line and why is this so powerful to have “jump” out at the reader?

10 CRANK- style and format
Look at “Home Sweet Home” on page 191. What shape do you see here? Why does the base of the house split ? Why does that space between the two sides get larger as you read the poem?

11 CRANK- style and format
Because the readers are able to see what Kristina feels, they get a better sense of what it would be like to be Kristina - what it would be like to have a drug problem like hers, which is capable of triggering many different emotions and having varying and conflicting ideas.
