2 NGAP Background Since 2008, several reports have forecasted a shortage of aviation professionals. Airbus, Boeing and IATA, among others, concur with predictions of this impending shortage, especially in the areas of pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance engineers, as reported in ICAO Doc 9956 in 2011 In May 2009, ICAO created the NGAP Task Force. This resulted from a round-table discussion with industry, regulators, educators, and international organizations NGAP Task Force is a forum to discuss issues and establish collaboration to support activities to prepare for and engage the next generation 12-13/07/2017 XV ICAO-ASPA Seminar

3 ICAO Forecast In the next 20 years, airlines will have to add 25,000 new aircraft to the current 17,000-strong commercial fleet By 2026, we will need: 480,000 new technicians to maintain these aircraft and over 350,000 pilots to fly them 12-13/07/2017 XV ICAO-ASPA Seminar

Programme supported and resolution adopted Urges Member States to work with the aviation community to identify long-term human resources needs and establish strategies to attract, educate and retain in the sector aviation professionals, considering gender equality Encourages Member States to promote best practices that focus on meeting the needs and values of the next generation of aviation professionals to enable employee productivity, performance, recruitment, retention, and safety 12-13/07/2017 XV ICAO-ASPA Seminar

10 NGAP Today Objective to support outreach for attracting youth by promoting career opportunities, from elementary school to university, into aviation education and professions, at global, regional and national levels – e.g. STEM Resourced by volunteers from partner Int. Committed by formal letter to SG) Implementation Workshops for roll-out of ATCO and ATSEP CBT provisions – 2017/2018 Outreach communication media/products including: NGAP web site NGAP Newsletter; NGAP article in ICAO Training Report; Collaboration with Halldale Media for Student Education and Careers in Aviation (SECA); Presentations at regional conferences/events around the world; and Sharing of NGAP best practices. 14 Capt. Shaesta Waiz HERE’S WHY SHE’S ABOUT TO FLY AROUND THE WORLD The first female certified civilian pilot from Afghanistan, the first in her family to attend college, she has her master’s degree and a burning desire to help others like her to achieve. 12-13/07/2017 XV ICAO-ASPA Seminar

15 Dreams Soar Dreams Soar founder Shaesta Waiz was born in Afghanistan and emigrated to the United States as a young girl with her parents and five sisters She is aiming to fly around the world solo, to inspire women and girls to reach for the stars… 12-13/07/2017 XV ICAO-ASPA Seminar
