2. NGAP Background
Since 2008, several reports have forecasted a shortage of aviation professionals.
Airbus, Boeing and IATA, among others, concur with predictions of this impending shortage, especially in the areas of pilots, air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance engineers, as reported in ICAO Doc 9956 in 2011
In May 2009, ICAO created the NGAP Task Force.
This resulted from a round-table discussion with industry, regulators, educators, and international organizations
NGAP Task Force is a forum to discuss issues and establish collaboration to support activities to prepare for and engage the next generation

3. ICAO Forecast
In the next 20 years, airlines will have to add 25,000 new aircraft to the current 17,000-strong commercial fleet
By 2026, we will need:
480,000 new technicians to maintain these aircraft and
over 350,000 pilots to fly them

Programme supported and resolution adopted
Urges Member States to work with the aviation community to identify long-term human resources needs and establish strategies to attract, educate and retain in the sector aviation professionals, considering gender equality
Encourages Member States to promote best practices that focus on meeting the needs and values of the next generation of aviation professionals to enable employee productivity, performance, recruitment, retention, and safety

9. 39th ICAO Assembly – Outcome cont.
Programme supported and resolution adopted
Encourages Member States, international and regional organizations, academia and industry to support the NGAP Programme, as one of the integral elements of capacity building, by providing technical expertise and guidance, and resources (human, financial and data) to help achieve the Programme’s objectives

10. NGAP Today
Objective to support outreach for attracting youth by promoting career opportunities, from elementary school to university, into aviation education and professions, at global, regional and national levels – e.g. STEM
Resourced by volunteers from partner Int. Orgs, States, service providers, industry, academia, and training institutions – no dedicated ICAO staff nor budget allotted
Currently managed by ANB – expanding to all ICAO Strategic Objectives and involving ROs

14. Capt. Shaesta Waiz
HERE’S WHY SHE’S ABOUT TO FLY AROUND THE WORLD The first female certified civilian pilot from Afghanistan, the first in her family to attend college, she has her master’s degree and a burning desire to help others like her to achieve.

Dreams Soar founder Shaesta Waiz was born in Afghanistan and emigrated to the United States as a young girl with her parents and five sisters
